Garage Wiring

Edinson Electrical provides comprehensive garage wiring services in Allentown, PA, equipping attached and detached garages with the electrical infrastructure needed for parking, storage, workshops, and modern uses.

Professional Garage Wiring Services

At Edinson Electrical, our professional garage wiring services support garages used for everything from basic vehicle parking to fully equipped workshops. Our licensed electricians install attached garage wiring as extensions of the main home electrical system, with circuits coming from the main panel through appropriate routing. Detached garage installations typically include subpanels fed from the main home panel through underground or overhead feeders, providing local distribution for garage circuits. Lighting installations balance general illumination for parking with task lighting for work areas. Receptacle installations include GFCI protection required by current code along with appropriately spaced outlets for the planned use. Dedicated circuits serve specific equipment including compressors, welders, EV chargers, and other high-amperage tools. Allentown, PA customers trust Edinson Electrical for garage wiring because we plan installations that match actual use rather than just meeting minimum code requirements. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty backs every garage wiring project we complete. Financing through Synchrony helps with larger projects that involve significant electrical work. Permits and inspections are part of every installation.

The electricians(Erwin Harold and their crew) did a wonderful job. Erwin explained step by step in details on the things they were going to work on before they did the job. They accommodated everyone in the household especially our autistic son. With all the cosmetic work that had to be done, in the end,it looked like no damage to the house was even done. Thanks to them now we have permanent power instead of partial power. We will definitely recommend them to everyone.

Erwin and Harold from Edinson Electrical Solutions visited us to work on the dishwasher, the circuit breaker panel, outlets and possible installation of a new outlet box in the basement. Erwin was very thorough. He went through all the requirements of what needed to be done and provided options for us to pick. We wound up putting in a new outlet box for the dishwasher (which he diagnosed as needing replacement). He installed a new whole house surge protector at the circuit breaker panel. He fixed a few of the troublesome outlets. We decided not to install the outlet box in the basement at this time. What was impressive was the time he spent explaining the pros and cons of what needed to be done. I appreciated the explanations. They did an outstanding job for us and not was reasonable for the work that was performed.

Erwin and team were great! Provided multiple options for our project so we could decide what works best. It was a large project, upgrading 2 panels, removed 1 meter and went to 200 amps. Communication was great throughout and he made us a priority. We used Edinson for a previous project as well, we will continue to use them and would highly recommend them for a small or large project.

We recently purchased our forever home and spent hours searching for a highly reputable electrician to help us with a large project. Erwin is the epitome of professional; he came for the estimate and talked us through every viable option to make major upgrades to our VERY outdated knob and tube electrical system. He was very receptive to our input and made us feel like we put a plan together as a team. His dedication to his clients is very apparent as he followed through with all the work he said he would do within the timeframe he provided; not only that, but he went above and beyond to ensure that we were left feeling safe and secure before he wrapped things up. He completely alleviated all our initial concerns by the time the project was done and has remained in contact to make sure everything has continued running smoothly. It’s rare to find someone that genuinely cares about others in the capacity that he does with the skills to boot. Don’t just take my word for it; give him a call and I guarantee that you will have him on standby for all your current and/or future needs. Keep up the great work!!!

I’m very impressed with Edinson Co, specifically having worked with Erwin to estimate and assess an older century house’s electrical system. The process was smooth, thorough and actually enjoyable. Erwin is a down to earth guy and will have no problem keeping you aware of what needs to be done work wise, albeit very kind, funny and friendly to talk with. Never once did I feel pressured or unsure about any of his work. The process was simple enough to any homeowner; going off a general inspection and digging even deeper into whatever pops up on the report is exactly what Erwin did. His report was thoroughly informative after taking time checking for GFI circuitry and for k&t. If you have an older house and are interested in finding out what kind of projects you might encounter, Erwin definitely will shed some light on the situation. I am so grateful Erwin was referred to me, being that finding an honest and dedicated electrician is golden nowadays. Thank you so much Erwin!

COMPLETED SERVICE CALLS

Garage Wiring Service

Garage wiring service begins with understanding the customer’s plans for the space. A garage used primarily for vehicle parking and basic storage has different electrical needs than one set up as a workshop with significant equipment. Hobby workshops with hand tools and a few power tools need different infrastructure than serious shops with welders, compressors, and dust collection systems. Garages serving as gym spaces, art studios, or home offices have their own requirements. We discuss intended uses with customers during planning so the wiring supports actual needs. Edinson Electrical brings the experience to plan installations that work well from day one.

Lighting design for garages balances general illumination with task-specific needs. Modern LED lighting provides excellent energy efficiency, long service life, and superior light quality compared to older fluorescent or incandescent options. We typically install LED shop lights or troffer-style fixtures for general illumination, sized for the garage square footage and ceiling height. Task lighting over workbenches, vehicle service areas, or specific work zones supplements general lighting where focused illumination matters. Switching arrangements often include multiple zones so different areas can be lit independently. Motion sensor controls work well for garages because they ensure lights are off when not needed and on when someone enters.

Receptacle installations follow code requirements that have become more specific over recent code cycles. Current code requires at least one receptacle in attached garages, though most installations include considerably more for practical reasons. GFCI protection is required on all garage receptacles to protect against shock hazards in this environment. We install receptacles at appropriate intervals along walls where workbenches, tool storage, or equipment will be located. Specific high-amperage receptacles including 30-amp and 50-amp 240-volt outlets are common for welders, compressors, and EV chargers. The specific receptacle types depend on the equipment being served.

Dedicated circuits serve high-amperage equipment that requires more than standard receptacle circuits can provide. Air compressors typically need dedicated 20-amp or 30-amp circuits depending on size and motor characteristics. Welders may need 30-amp or 50-amp 240-volt circuits depending on the welder rating. Wood shop equipment including table saws, jointers, and dust collectors often benefit from dedicated circuits. EV chargers need their own dedicated 240-volt circuits sized for the specific charger. We size and install each dedicated circuit based on the actual equipment requirements rather than generic assumptions.

Garage door opener circuits are easily overlooked but deserve attention during garage wiring. Modern garage door openers typically operate on 120-volt circuits with appropriate amperage for the motor size. Ceiling-mounted openers need outlet placement that allows the opener to plug in without extension cords. Battery backup features on some openers may require receptacles at specific locations. Smart openers with Wi-Fi connectivity benefit from outlets near the opener for any required smart hub equipment. We plan these details during installation so the garage door system integrates cleanly with the overall electrical service.

Detached garage installations involve different planning than attached garage wiring. The detached structure requires its own electrical service, typically through a subpanel fed by an underground feeder from the main home panel. The subpanel size depends on the planned electrical loads, with 60-amp, 100-amp, and 200-amp panels common depending on garage size and intended use. The underground feeder includes appropriately sized conductors with code-required equipment grounding. Grounding requirements at the detached structure depend on current code interpretation and local inspector preferences. We handle these requirements correctly during installation.

Future expansion deserves consideration during garage wiring projects because adding capacity later is more expensive than incorporating it during initial work. Reserving panel space for future circuits costs nothing during initial installation but provides flexibility for adding equipment later. Installing conduit runs to specific future-use locations supports later additions without breaking into walls or ceilings. Service capacity adequate for current and reasonable future needs avoids the need for service upgrade just a few years after initial wiring. Edinson Electrical thinks about future needs during planning, not just immediate requirements. Allentown customers benefit from installations that support how garage use typically evolves over years of ownership.

The Importance of a Licensed Electrician for Garage Wiring in Allentown

Hiring a licensed electrician for garage wiring in Allentown matters because garages present specific electrical challenges that require professional expertise. Garages often serve uses that combine high-amperage equipment with damp environments, creating safety considerations that go beyond typical residential wiring. GFCI protection requirements, dedicated circuit sizing, and the use of appropriate wiring methods all require specific knowledge of code requirements that apply to garage installations. Detached garage wiring involves subpanel installation, underground feeder routing, and grounding considerations that DIY work routinely gets wrong. Pennsylvania law requires licensing for electrical work specifically because of these safety implications. Insurance companies investigate garage electrical installations carefully after fires or other incidents, and unlicensed work can result in denied claims. Licensed contractors carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation that protects customers throughout the project. They also handle the permit and inspection process that ensures the installation meets current code. Edinson Electrical is fully licensed and insured in the State of Pennsylvania with extensive garage wiring experience. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty backs every installation we complete, and we provide the documentation customers need for their property records.

Commonly Asked Garage Wiring Questions

Garage wiring projects vary widely based on how the garage will be used and whether it is attached or detached. The questions below cover what homeowners across Allentown most often ask before scheduling garage wiring work.

Garage wiring costs depend on the scope of the installation, whether the garage is attached or detached, and the specific electrical infrastructure needed. Basic attached garage wiring with a few outlets, basic lighting, and a garage door opener circuit falls within a modest price range. Workshop-level installations with multiple dedicated circuits, extensive lighting, and significant equipment circuits cost more. Detached garage wiring with subpanel installation, underground feeder, and complete circuit installation represents one of the larger garage electrical projects.

Several factors affect garage wiring pricing significantly. Underground feeder runs to detached garages add excavation and conduit installation to the project cost. Long underground runs cost more than short runs because of both materials and labor. Finished garage walls and ceilings require more careful work than unfinished spaces. High-amperage equipment circuits cost more than standard 120-volt circuits because of the larger conductors and breakers involved. Permit fees vary by township across the Lehigh Valley but are typically modest.

The specific equipment and use planned for the garage drives much of the cost variation. Adding an EV charger circuit, a welder circuit, and a compressor circuit to a basic garage wiring project adds meaningful cost compared to lighting and outlets only. Bundling these additions during initial wiring usually costs significantly less than retrofitting them later. Financing through Synchrony helps with larger projects on monthly payments. Edinson Electrical provides detailed written estimates that itemize all costs clearly. Allentown customers value the transparent pricing that supports informed decisions about their garage electrical scope.

A typical attached garage wiring project takes between one and two days depending on scope. Basic installations with lighting, a few outlets, and a garage door opener circuit fall on the shorter end. Workshop-level wiring with multiple dedicated circuits and extensive outlet installation extends to one to two days. The work includes panel work, routing wiring through walls and ceilings, installing devices and fixtures, and testing.

Detached garage wiring typically takes longer because of the subpanel installation and underground feeder work involved. The underground feeder portion alone can take a full day including trenching, conduit installation, and conductor pulling. Subpanel installation, branch circuits within the garage, and final connections add additional time. Complete detached garage projects often span two to four days from start to inspection-ready completion.

Inspection requirements affect overall project timeline because the work cannot be considered complete until inspection passes. Most jurisdictions perform inspections within one to three business days of request. Underground installations sometimes require rough inspections before the trench is backfilled, which adds scheduling considerations. We coordinate inspection scheduling proactively so projects move efficiently from start to finish. Edinson Electrical communicates expected timelines clearly so customers can plan around the work. Allentown customers value the predictable scheduling and efficient project completion.

GFCI protection is required for all garage receptacles under current National Electrical Code. The requirement protects against shock hazards in environments where damp floors, exposure to weather through open garage doors, and the use of power tools all increase shock risks. Even garage receptacles that seem unlikely to encounter water need GFCI protection because the code applies to all receptacles in the garage regardless of specific location. The protection can be provided by GFCI receptacles at the location, GFCI breakers at the panel, or downstream GFCI protection from an upstream GFCI device.

Several common scenarios in garages illustrate why GFCI protection matters. Plugging in tools while standing on a damp concrete floor creates shock risk if the tool develops a fault. Working on vehicles where coolant, brake fluid, or other liquids may be present creates similar hazards. Outdoor tools brought into the garage after use in wet conditions can have damp interiors that create faults. GFCI protection senses these fault conditions and interrupts power within milliseconds, often before the user feels more than a mild shock.

Specific exceptions and considerations apply to certain garage installations. Dedicated circuits serving fixed equipment like garage door openers traditionally did not require GFCI protection, though recent code updates have expanded the requirement to include most garage circuits. Refrigerator and freezer circuits face the same GFCI requirements as other garage outlets, which sometimes causes nuisance tripping concerns. Modern GFCI devices are generally compatible with these loads, though occasional incompatibility issues do arise. Edinson Electrical installs GFCI protection that meets current code while addressing practical concerns about reliability. Allentown garage owners benefit from protection that supports both safety and functionality.

240-volt circuits are common in garage wiring and serve a wide range of equipment that household 120-volt circuits cannot adequately power. Air compressors larger than about 1.5 horsepower typically operate on 240 volts for better starting and running performance. Welders almost always operate on 240 volts, with specific amperage requirements based on welder type and rating. EV chargers operate on 240 volts to deliver Level 2 charging speeds. Some shop equipment including table saws and dust collectors comes in 240-volt versions that perform better than their 120-volt counterparts.

Installing 240-volt circuits requires dedicated circuits with appropriately sized breakers, conductors, and receptacles. A standard 30-amp 240-volt circuit uses 10-gauge copper conductors and a NEMA 6-30R or 14-30R receptacle depending on whether neutral is needed. A 50-amp 240-volt circuit uses 6-gauge copper conductors and a NEMA 6-50R or 14-50R receptacle. We size circuits based on the specific equipment being served, with attention to manufacturer specifications and code requirements.

Panel capacity affects how many 240-volt circuits can be added to a garage. Each 240-volt circuit uses two positions in the panel and adds significant load to the service. Garages with multiple high-amperage 240-volt circuits sometimes need subpanels to provide adequate space and organization for the circuits. We perform load calculations to confirm that adding 240-volt circuits remains within service capacity. Edinson Electrical helps Allentown customers plan 240-volt circuit additions based on actual equipment needs. The right approach supports the garage workshop or charging needs without compromising the rest of the home’s electrical service.

The number of outlets in a garage depends on the planned use and the size of the space. Current National Electrical Code requires at least one receptacle in attached garages, which is a minimum that rarely meets practical needs. Most practical garage installations include considerably more outlets to support typical garage activities. A general rule of thumb is one outlet on each wall plus additional outlets at workbench locations and other high-use areas.

Workshop applications benefit from outlets placed at frequent intervals along workbench walls and at convenient locations for moving equipment. Outlets at workbench height eliminate the need to bend down to access power. Outlets on adjacent walls allow flexibility for tool placement. Multiple circuit configurations help avoid tripping breakers when several tools run simultaneously. We discuss workshop layout with customers during planning so outlet placement supports actual workflow.

Vehicle service areas need outlets positioned for use with vehicle work. Outlets near where vehicles park allow easy access for trickle chargers, vacuum cleaners, and other vehicle-related equipment. Ceiling outlets provide power for retractable cord reels that keep cords off the floor during use. Outdoor outlets near garage doors support outdoor power needs without running extension cords from inside. Edinson Electrical plans outlet placement during initial wiring so the garage works well for its intended uses. Allentown customers benefit from installations that support how they actually use their garages.

LED lighting is the standard for modern garage installations because of its energy efficiency, long service life, and superior light quality compared to older alternatives. LED shop lights with linear configurations work well for general garage illumination, providing bright, even light across the space. LED troffer fixtures with diffusers reduce glare and work well in garages used for activities that benefit from softer light distribution. The specific fixture style depends on ceiling type, height, and personal preferences.

Quantity and placement of lighting affects how usable the garage is for different activities. General illumination needs about 75 lumens per square foot for adequate light at the floor level. Workshop areas with detailed work need higher light levels, with 150 lumens per square foot or more being typical for serious workbench areas. Vehicle service areas benefit from lighting positioned to illuminate engine compartments and undercarriages without creating shadow areas. We size lighting installations based on these guidelines and the specific use planned.

Switching arrangements significantly affect lighting usability. Multiple switch zones allow lighting different areas independently rather than turning on all lights every time the garage is used. Motion sensor switches work well for garages because they ensure lights come on when needed without requiring manual operation. Smart switches with scheduling and remote control offer additional convenience. We install switching arrangements appropriate to the garage size and use patterns. Edinson Electrical provides Allentown customers with lighting that supports both casual garage use and serious workshop activities. The right lighting transforms a basic garage into a usable space for the full range of intended activities.

Subpanel installation in garages is common and often makes sense for both attached and detached garage installations. Attached garages with multiple high-amperage circuits or significant electrical demand sometimes benefit from local subpanels that organize garage circuits and reduce the number of feeder runs from the main panel. Detached garages almost always need subpanels because the alternative of running individual circuits from the main panel is impractical and code generally requires disconnect capability at the detached structure.

Subpanel sizing depends on the planned electrical loads. Basic garage subpanels at 60 amps or 100 amps serve simple installations with lighting, outlets, and a few dedicated circuits. Workshop-level subpanels at 100 amps or larger support shops with welders, compressors, and multiple high-amperage tools. EV charger installations sometimes drive subpanel sizing because the chargers add significant continuous load. We perform load calculations to size subpanels appropriately for actual needs.

The feeder from the main panel to the garage subpanel involves conductor sizing, routing, and grounding considerations specific to subpanel installations. Four-wire feeders are required for subpanels with separated neutral and ground conductors. Underground feeders for detached garages need code-compliant burial depths and appropriate cable or conductor types. Edinson Electrical handles subpanel installations completely, including the feeder work and proper connection at both ends. Allentown customers planning serious garage electrical use benefit from subpanel installations that support current needs and reasonable future growth.

Detached garages typically connect to the main home electrical service through a feeder rather than having separate utility service. The feeder runs from the main home panel to a subpanel at the detached garage, providing electrical service without requiring a second utility meter. This approach is more cost-effective than installing separate utility service to a detached structure on the same property. The shared service uses one meter but distributes power to both the main home and the garage.

Some larger detached structures occasionally have their own utility service with separate metering. These installations involve utility coordination for service installation and have higher long-term operating costs because of separate utility billing. The specific situations where separate service makes sense are relatively limited, and most residential detached garages use shared service through feeders from the main home.

Underground feeder installation is the most common method for connecting detached garages to the main home electrical service. The underground feeder uses appropriately sized direct burial cable or conductors in PVC conduit buried at code-required depths. The feeder must include all four conductors required for subpanel installations including two ungrounded conductors, a neutral, and an equipment grounding conductor. Edinson Electrical handles underground feeder installations completely including excavation, conduit work, and final connections. Allentown customers benefit from installations that connect detached garages reliably to their main electrical service. The shared service approach supports the garage well without the complications and ongoing costs of separate utility service.
