Circuit Breaker Repair
Edinson Electrical provides reliable circuit breaker repair services in Allentown, PA, restoring safe overcurrent protection to homes and businesses experiencing breaker trips, panel issues, or signs of breaker failure.
Professional Circuit Breaker Repair Services
At Edinson Electrical, our professional circuit breaker repair services focus on identifying the real problem rather than simply swapping parts and hoping for the best. Our licensed electricians arrive with diagnostic tools including multimeters, clamp meters, infrared cameras, and circuit analyzers to gather objective data about what is actually happening inside your panel. We never assume a breaker is bad without testing the circuit first because most repeat tripping is caused by issues downstream of the breaker. Loose terminals, deteriorated splices, damaged conductors, and overloaded circuits all mimic breaker failure and require different solutions. When the breaker itself is genuinely failing, we replace it with the correct manufacturer-listed component for your specific panel. Repairs are completed with proper torque on every connection because loose connections are a leading cause of breaker problems. We test the repaired circuit thoroughly before considering the job complete. Customers in Allentown, PA trust Edinson Electrical because we solve problems permanently rather than masking them with parts changes. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty backs every repair we complete. Financing through Synchrony is available for larger projects that involve multiple breakers or panel work.

Edwin & Harold were professional & very congenial. My problem was addressed the same day as my scheduled appointment.
Knowledgeable, good service , great customer service from booking with Amanda all the way to having the technicians in my home
Excellent customer service! Took the care and time to patiently explain everything and listen to my needs and concerns and offered multiple options to consider at my own pace.

They diagnosed the issue, coordinated the work, and had everything fully operational in just two visits. We’re grateful for their efficiency and expertise.
The electricians(Erwin Harold and their crew) did a wonderful job. Erwin explained step by step in details on the things they were going to work on before they did the job. They accommodated everyone in the household especially our autistic son. With all the cosmetic work that had to be done, in the end,it looked like no damage to the house was even done. Thanks to them now we have permanent power instead of partial power. We will definitely recommend them to everyone.
Erwin and Harold from Edinson Electrical Solutions visited us to work on the dishwasher, the circuit breaker panel, outlets and possible installation of a new outlet box in the basement. Erwin was very thorough. He went through all the requirements of what needed to be done and provided options for us to pick. We wound up putting in a new outlet box for the dishwasher (which he diagnosed as needing replacement). He installed a new whole house surge protector at the circuit breaker panel. He fixed a few of the troublesome outlets. We decided not to install the outlet box in the basement at this time. What was impressive was the time he spent explaining the pros and cons of what needed to be done. I appreciated the explanations. They did an outstanding job for us and not was reasonable for the work that was performed.
Erwin and team were great! Provided multiple options for our project so we could decide what works best. It was a large project, upgrading 2 panels, removed 1 meter and went to 200 amps. Communication was great throughout and he made us a priority. We used Edinson for a previous project as well, we will continue to use them and would highly recommend them for a small or large project.

Outstanding service. If you choose this company, you won’t have any problems
I had a great experience with Edinson Electrical Solutions. They helped make my house much safer by upgrading all the smoke alarms, fixing some wiring issues with my baseboard heaters, and installing a electronic surge protector. Juan and his crew were very professional, clean and respectful of our home. They fixed a ceiling fan and installed all new smoke alarm / carbon monoxide detectors, efficiently throughout the house.
We recently purchased our forever home and spent hours searching for a highly reputable electrician to help us with a large project. Erwin is the epitome of professional; he came for the estimate and talked us through every viable option to make major upgrades to our VERY outdated knob and tube electrical system. He was very receptive to our input and made us feel like we put a plan together as a team. His dedication to his clients is very apparent as he followed through with all the work he said he would do within the timeframe he provided; not only that, but he went above and beyond to ensure that we were left feeling safe and secure before he wrapped things up. He completely alleviated all our initial concerns by the time the project was done and has remained in contact to make sure everything has continued running smoothly. It’s rare to find someone that genuinely cares about others in the capacity that he does with the skills to boot. Don’t just take my word for it; give him a call and I guarantee that you will have him on standby for all your current and/or future needs. Keep up the great work!!!

Edwin was awesome. He showed exactly when he said he would and made sure the job was done. Perfect work.
Erwin not only fixed the initial problem that he was called for but probably saved our house from a potential fire hazard by identifying a faulty wired main breaker and evidence of water leaking into our main electrical panel. Erwin is knowledgeable, considerate, and very personable. We would not hesitate to call him again.

I’m very impressed with Edinson Co, specifically having worked with Erwin to estimate and assess an older century house’s electrical system. The process was smooth, thorough and actually enjoyable. Erwin is a down to earth guy and will have no problem keeping you aware of what needs to be done work wise, albeit very kind, funny and friendly to talk with. Never once did I feel pressured or unsure about any of his work. The process was simple enough to any homeowner; going off a general inspection and digging even deeper into whatever pops up on the report is exactly what Erwin did. His report was thoroughly informative after taking time checking for GFI circuitry and for k&t. If you have an older house and are interested in finding out what kind of projects you might encounter, Erwin definitely will shed some light on the situation. I am so grateful Erwin was referred to me, being that finding an honest and dedicated electrician is golden nowadays. Thank you so much Erwin!
Erwin arrived on time. The problem was fixed. Very professional. I would call them again

Circuit Breaker Repair Service
Circuit breaker repair begins with a careful diagnostic process designed to identify the actual cause of the symptoms a customer is experiencing. Our team starts by asking detailed questions about when the problem occurs, what devices are running, and whether anything has changed recently in the home. A breaker that trips only when the dishwasher and microwave run together points to an overloaded circuit, while one that trips at random times suggests something else entirely. We then inspect the panel visually for signs of heat damage, corrosion, loose connections, and any evidence of arcing. Infrared thermometers reveal hot spots that are not visible to the naked eye and often pinpoint the exact connection causing trouble. We measure voltage, amperage, and ground continuity to confirm whether the circuit is operating within specification. Each step of this process narrows down the possibilities until the root cause becomes clear. Skipping this diagnostic work is how electricians end up replacing perfectly good breakers without solving the customer’s actual problem. Edinson Electrical takes the time to do this right because cutting corners almost always leads to callbacks.
Tripping breakers fall into a few major categories, each requiring a different repair approach. Overload trips happen when too much current flows through the circuit for too long, usually because too many devices are running at once. Short circuit trips occur when hot and neutral conductors contact each other, causing instant high-current trips. Ground fault trips happen when the hot conductor contacts a grounded surface, which may also indicate a damaged appliance or compromised wiring insulation. Arc fault trips, on AFCI-protected circuits, indicate dangerous arcing somewhere along the conductor path. Each type produces different diagnostic clues, and a skilled electrician can usually identify the category within the first few minutes of investigation. The repair depends entirely on the category because fixing the wrong problem wastes time and money. Our team knows what to look for and how to confirm a diagnosis before recommending repairs. This methodical approach is what separates professional electrical work from guesswork.
Hot breakers are one of the most concerning symptoms a homeowner can notice in a panel. A breaker that feels warm to the touch under normal load is showing signs of internal failure or a loose connection generating heat. Heat accelerates breaker failure and can eventually lead to electrical fires inside the panel itself. We use infrared thermometers to confirm the temperature differential between the suspect breaker and surrounding breakers operating under similar loads. Significant temperature differences indicate problems that require immediate attention. The cause is sometimes a loose connection where the conductor attaches to the breaker, sometimes a loose connection where the breaker attaches to the bus bar, and sometimes internal degradation within the breaker itself. We address each possible cause systematically until the heat source is eliminated. Replacing a hot breaker without fixing the underlying loose connection means the new breaker will fail the same way. Edinson Electrical finds the actual problem so the repair lasts.
Breakers that will not reset properly indicate either an active fault on the circuit or an internal failure within the breaker. When a breaker trips and immediately re-trips upon reset, there is almost always an active short circuit or ground fault on the circuit. We isolate the problem by disconnecting devices one at a time until the circuit holds, which identifies the faulty equipment. Sometimes the problem is in the wiring itself rather than a connected device, which requires more extensive troubleshooting. A breaker that feels mushy, will not move to the off position, or falls back when toggled is showing signs of mechanical failure inside the housing. These breakers must be replaced because internal repair is not possible or safe. We always confirm the underlying circuit is healthy before installing a replacement breaker. Otherwise the new breaker will trip immediately and the customer is back where they started.
Panel-level problems sometimes masquerade as breaker problems and require different repair approaches. Scorched bus bars indicate that a breaker has not been making proper contact, which generates heat that damages the panel itself. Bus bar damage cannot be repaired in the field, which means the entire panel needs replacement. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and certain Challenger panels are particularly prone to bus bar damage because of original design issues. Loose connections at the main lugs where service conductors enter the panel can also create symptoms throughout the panel. These connections must be tightened by a licensed electrician because they remain energized even when the main breaker is off. We identify these conditions during diagnostic visits and explain the implications to customers honestly. Some repairs are appropriate for the existing panel, while others require panel replacement to be safe. Edinson Electrical makes these recommendations based on what is actually best for the customer.
GFCI and AFCI breakers fail differently than standard breakers because they contain electronic components in addition to the mechanical trip mechanism. The electronics can fail from voltage surges, lightning strikes, or simply age. A GFCI breaker that fails its monthly test has lost its protection function and must be replaced immediately regardless of whether it still passes current normally. An AFCI breaker that trips for no apparent reason may be detecting actual arcing problems on the circuit or may be experiencing nuisance tripping from electronics on the circuit. Diagnostic visits for AFCI problems involve inspecting splice points, examining device terminations, and sometimes replacing the breaker with one from a different production run. We have the equipment to test these breakers and identify whether the protection is still functioning. Replacing electronic breakers is more expensive than standard breakers, but the safety benefit makes them worth maintaining. Edinson Electrical handles GFCI and AFCI repair as part of routine service.
Older breakers present unique repair challenges because replacement parts may be discontinued, hard to source, or available only as counterfeits. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers should not be repaired or replaced; the entire panel should be upgraded because the design itself is unsafe. Zinsco breakers face similar issues with bus bar corrosion that ongoing breaker replacement cannot fix. Pushmatic breakers, while not actively dangerous in most cases, are increasingly difficult to source as new units. We explain these realities to customers honestly rather than chasing repairs that cannot succeed. Panel replacement is sometimes the right answer even when a customer was hoping for a simple breaker swap. Financing through Synchrony helps make these larger projects manageable. Edinson Electrical provides honest assessments and code-compliant solutions. Allentown customers appreciate that we explain options rather than pushing the most expensive choice.

The Importance of a Licensed Electrician for Circuit Breaker Repair in Allentown
Hiring a licensed electrician for circuit breaker repair in Allentown is critical because the work happens inside an energized panel where mistakes can cause serious injury or fire. Even with the main breaker turned off, the service conductors entering the panel from the utility remain live at full voltage. Licensed electricians know how to work safely around these hazards using insulated tools, personal protective equipment, and proper procedures. They also have the diagnostic training to identify the actual cause of breaker problems rather than just swapping parts. Pennsylvania law requires licensing for electrical work precisely because the consequences of improper repair are so severe. Insurance companies frequently deny claims involving unlicensed electrical work, leaving homeowners financially responsible for fire damage and injuries. Licensed contractors carry liability insurance that protects customers if something unexpected occurs during the work. They also stay current on continuing education that covers known defects in older panels and new diagnostic techniques. Edinson Electrical is fully licensed and insured in the State of Pennsylvania. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty is possible only because our team has the training, tools, and experience to repair circuit breakers correctly the first time.

Commonly Asked Circuit Breaker Repair Questions
Circuit breaker problems can be confusing because the same symptoms often have several possible causes. The questions below cover what homeowners across Allentown and the Lehigh Valley most often want to know when scheduling breaker repair.
A breaker that keeps tripping after being reset is doing exactly what it was designed to do, which means there is a real problem on the circuit that needs to be addressed. The most common cause is a circuit overload where the total load exceeds the breaker’s rating for an extended period. Kitchen circuits, bathroom circuits, and garage circuits trip most often because they serve high-amperage appliances like microwaves, hair dryers, and space heaters. Simply unplugging some devices and redistributing loads sometimes solves the problem permanently. Other times the wiring is correct but the load demand has grown beyond what the original circuit was designed to handle, in which case a new dedicated circuit may be needed.
Short circuits and ground faults cause more serious tripping that usually requires professional diagnosis to resolve. A short circuit occurs when the hot conductor contacts the neutral or another hot conductor, creating an instant high-current path that trips the breaker immediately upon reset. A ground fault happens when the hot conductor contacts a grounded surface, including a person or a damaged appliance. Damaged extension cords, broken appliance cords, water intrusion in outlets, and pest damage to wiring all create these conditions. We use a process of elimination, disconnecting devices and circuits systematically, to isolate the source of the fault. Sometimes the problem is obvious once identified; other times it requires opening junction boxes or device locations to inspect connections.
Failing breakers and aging panels account for a significant portion of repeat tripping calls. Breakers weaken with each trip event, eventually tripping at lower amperage than their rated capacity. Loose connections at the breaker, at devices on the circuit, or at any splice point generate heat that triggers thermal trip mechanisms. We inspect the entire circuit during diagnostic visits, not just the breaker itself. Edinson Electrical finds the actual cause and addresses it directly rather than just replacing parts in hopes the problem goes away. Allentown customers benefit from this thorough approach because problems get solved permanently. A single proper repair is far less expensive than repeated service calls for the same issue.
Determining whether a circuit breaker is actually faulty requires testing rather than assumption because most tripping breakers are responding to real circuit problems. The first test is simply moving the load to a different circuit and seeing if the trips follow the load or stay with the original circuit. If the original circuit trips with nothing connected to it, the problem is in the wiring or the breaker itself. If the trips follow the load to a different circuit, the problem is with a connected device rather than the breaker. This simple test eliminates a lot of unnecessary breaker replacements.
Visual inspection reveals additional clues about breaker condition during a diagnostic visit. Scorch marks, melted plastic, or cracked housing on a breaker always indicate the need for immediate replacement. Heat discoloration on the bus bar where the breaker connects suggests the breaker has been failing to make proper contact. A breaker that feels mushy, falls back to tripped when toggled to on, or will not reset at all is showing mechanical failure inside the housing. These visual signs combined with the operational symptoms usually confirm whether the breaker is genuinely failing. Without these signs, we test the underlying circuit before condemning the breaker.
Electrical testing provides the most definitive answer about breaker condition. We measure voltage at the breaker terminals to confirm it is delivering proper power when on. Amperage measurements at the conductor reveal whether the circuit is actually overloaded or running at safe levels. Insulation resistance testing using a megohmmeter identifies hidden conductor damage that creates intermittent faults. Edinson Electrical uses these tools to gather objective data rather than relying on guesswork. Allentown customers benefit from accurate diagnosis that leads to the right repair the first time. Replacing a breaker when the circuit has the problem just wastes money. Our diagnostic process protects customers from unnecessary parts replacement.
Circuit breakers themselves cannot be repaired in the field because the internal mechanisms are sealed inside the housing and not designed for service. Manufacturers explicitly prohibit field repair of breakers, and opening a breaker housing voids the UL listing and any warranty. The trip mechanisms involve precise calibrations that cannot be reset accurately without factory equipment. Even if a repair were physically possible, the safety implications of an improperly calibrated breaker would make it inadvisable. Replacement is the only proper response when a breaker is actually defective.
The good news is that most circuit breaker repair calls do not actually require breaker replacement. The vast majority of tripping problems are caused by issues in the circuit rather than failures in the breaker. Loose terminal connections, damaged conductors, overloaded circuits, and failing appliances all cause symptoms that mimic breaker failure. These problems are absolutely repairable, and the repair often costs less than a new breaker. We focus on these root causes because addressing them produces lasting results. Customers sometimes arrive expecting to pay for a new breaker and leave with a fixed circuit and the same breaker still in service.
Panel-level repairs sometimes restore proper function without breaker replacement. Tightening loose lug connections, cleaning corroded bus bar contact points, and improving conductor terminations all restore proper electrical contact. Bus bar damage, however, cannot be repaired and usually requires panel replacement. We distinguish between problems that can be fixed in place and problems that require larger solutions. Edinson Electrical helps customers understand these distinctions during the diagnostic visit. Allentown homeowners appreciate that we explain the options honestly rather than pushing the most expensive solution. Sometimes a small repair extends the life of an existing panel for many years. Other times the panel itself has reached the end of its safe service life.
Most circuit breaker repair visits take between one and three hours depending on the complexity of the diagnosis. Simple problems like a clearly failed breaker on a healthy circuit can be diagnosed and repaired in about an hour. More complex problems involving intermittent tripping, multiple symptoms, or hidden conductor damage take longer because the diagnostic process requires more thorough investigation. We never rush diagnosis because skipping steps leads to wrong conclusions and callbacks. The time spent finding the actual problem is the most valuable part of the visit.
Intermittent problems are the most time-consuming to diagnose because the symptom may not be present when the electrician arrives. We sometimes need to monitor the circuit under various load conditions to reproduce the problem. Customers can help by tracking when the trips occur and what was running at the time. This information often narrows down the possibilities significantly. In some cases we install temporary monitoring equipment that records circuit activity over several days, then return to review the data and complete the repair.
Bundled repairs involving multiple breakers or related panel work take longer than single-breaker visits but offer better overall value. Customers who suspect multiple breakers are aging can have them inspected and replaced together, spreading travel and setup costs across more work. Panel cleaning, retorquing of all connections, and circuit directory updates are sometimes performed during these visits as preventive maintenance. Edinson Electrical communicates the expected timeline at the start of every visit so customers can plan accordingly. Allentown homeowners appreciate the efficiency of our diagnostic process and the lasting nature of our repairs. We arrive prepared, work systematically, and leave the panel in better condition than we found it.
The cost of repairing a circuit breaker varies significantly based on what the actual problem turns out to be. Diagnostic visits to identify the cause of breaker problems carry a base service charge that includes inspection, testing, and a clear explanation of findings. When the breaker itself is faulty and needs replacement, the cost includes the breaker, labor, and any related work. Standard breakers in common panel brands are the least expensive option, while GFCI and AFCI breakers cost more because of their internal electronics. Older panels requiring discontinued breakers can add to the cost when parts must be specially sourced.
Most breaker repair calls turn out to involve problems other than the breaker itself, which changes the cost calculation. Loose connection repairs typically cost less than full breaker replacement because parts are inexpensive. Tracing and repairing damaged conductors costs more because of the labor involved in locating and accessing the problem area. Overloaded circuits sometimes require adding a new dedicated circuit, which is a larger project than a simple repair. We provide written estimates for any work beyond basic diagnosis so customers understand the scope and price before authorizing additional work.
Older panels with chronic problems sometimes warrant replacement rather than continued repair. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and similar panels with known safety issues are not worth investing in beyond basic safety repairs. We explain these economic realities honestly so customers can make informed decisions. Financing through Synchrony makes larger projects manageable on a monthly basis. Edinson Electrical prices work fairly and clearly without hidden fees or surprise charges. Allentown customers know what they are paying for and why. Our goal is lasting value, not just a low quote followed by repeated callbacks.
A tripping breaker is not dangerous in itself because the trip is the safety device working as designed to prevent more serious problems. The breaker trips precisely to prevent overheating, fires, and equipment damage that would otherwise occur. What is dangerous is ignoring repeated trips or attempting to defeat the protection by oversizing breakers or jumpering circuits. A breaker that trips repeatedly is reporting a real problem that needs investigation, not an annoyance to be worked around. Replacing a tripping breaker with a larger one allows the underlying problem to continue without protection, which can lead to fires.
The conditions causing the trips can range from minor to serious depending on the specific situation. A breaker tripping when the toaster and microwave run together indicates a circuit overload, which is annoying but not immediately dangerous. A breaker tripping for no apparent reason at random times may indicate damaged wiring inside walls, which is a real fire hazard. AFCI breakers tripping repeatedly often signal arcing problems that could cause fires if left unaddressed. The breaker’s job is to interrupt the dangerous condition before it causes damage, so the protection is working as intended.
Certain warning signs combined with breaker problems indicate immediate danger that should not be ignored. Burning smells from outlets, switches, or the panel itself require immediate professional attention. Visible scorch marks, melted plastic, or hot spots on devices indicate active electrical problems that could escalate to fire. Buzzing, popping, or crackling sounds from outlets or the panel are also warnings worth taking seriously. Edinson Electrical responds to these situations promptly because the consequences of delay can be severe. Allentown customers can call us when these warning signs appear, and we will assess the situation quickly. Acting on warning signs early often prevents much more expensive damage later.
Resetting a tripped breaker once is reasonable when the cause is obvious, such as plugging in a high-amperage device that exceeded the circuit capacity. After unplugging the device, the breaker should reset normally and hold. This kind of trip is annoying but not necessarily indicative of any larger problem. Multiple trips of the same breaker, however, indicate something that warrants professional attention. The breaker is telling you something, and the right response is to find out what it is saying rather than ignoring the message.
Certain conditions make calling an electrician the right choice from the very first trip. A breaker that trips with nothing connected to the circuit suggests a wiring problem inside walls that requires diagnosis. A breaker accompanied by burning smells, buzzing sounds, or visible damage to outlets or switches indicates an active problem that could escalate. GFCI breakers that trip repeatedly on a circuit with no visible cause may indicate hidden moisture intrusion or damaged appliances. AFCI breakers tripping at random times often signal real arcing problems that could lead to fires. These situations deserve professional attention promptly rather than repeated resets.
Repeated trips that go unaddressed often lead to more expensive problems down the road. Loose connections that cause occasional trips gradually worsen until they cause persistent failures or fires. Aging breakers that nuisance trip eventually fail to trip at all, leaving the circuit unprotected. Damaged wiring deteriorates further with each cycle of heating and cooling. Edinson Electrical provides reasonable, honest diagnostic visits that often save customers money in the long run. Allentown homeowners benefit from catching problems early before they escalate. The cost of a service call is small compared to the cost of repairing fire damage or replacing destroyed equipment. When in doubt, call a licensed electrician.
A failing circuit breaker can absolutely damage other parts of the electrical system through several different mechanisms. The most common damage comes from heat generated by loose or corroded connections at the breaker. This heat damages the bus bar where the breaker connects, the conductor terminations, and sometimes nearby breakers in the panel. Severe heat damage to bus bars usually requires full panel replacement because field repair is not practical or safe. The damage often progresses slowly until reaching a tipping point, at which time the failure can be sudden and severe.
Breakers that fail to trip during overcurrent conditions allow conductors to overheat, which damages the insulation and can start fires inside walls. This kind of failure is particularly associated with Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers, which have a documented history of failing to trip during faults. Zinsco breakers also exhibit this behavior in some cases, along with bus bar corrosion that compounds the problem. Insurance companies are well aware of these issues and may charge higher premiums or refuse coverage entirely on homes with these panels. Replacing these panels is an investment in long-term safety and home value.
Connected equipment can also be damaged by breaker problems in indirect ways. Voltage sags caused by loose connections affect electronics, lighting, and motor-driven appliances throughout the home. Repeated nuisance tripping shortens the life of equipment that depends on consistent power. In commercial settings, breaker problems can interrupt operations and damage expensive equipment that does not tolerate power interruptions well. Edinson Electrical inspects panels thoroughly during repair visits to identify and address related damage. Allentown customers benefit from this comprehensive approach to electrical service. We treat the panel as a system rather than just replacing the part that is currently failing. This perspective often saves customers from larger problems later.
