Circuit Breaker Installation
Edinson Electrical provides expert circuit breaker installation services in Allentown, PA, equipping homes with the proper overcurrent protection needed for safe, reliable electrical performance.
Professional Circuit Breaker Installation Services
At Edinson Electrical, our professional circuit breaker installation services protect the people, equipment, and structures connected to your electrical system. Our licensed electricians install new breakers for added circuits, replace failed breakers, and upgrade existing breakers to modern AFCI or GFCI protection as required by current code. We always match the breaker to the panel because using mismatched or unlisted breakers is one of the most common causes of insurance claim denials. Sizing is based on the conductor gauge and the load served, never the convenience of an available breaker. Our team verifies torque specifications on every connection because loose terminals are a leading cause of breaker failures and electrical fires. We test the circuit after installation using a multimeter and circuit analyzer to confirm proper voltage, polarity, and ground integrity. Customers in Allentown, PA trust Edinson Electrical because we treat every breaker installation as a safety-critical task, not a routine swap. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty backs every breaker we install. Financing through Synchrony is available for larger projects involving multiple breakers or panel upgrades. Every job is documented with photos and a written summary for the customer’s records.

Edwin & Harold were professional & very congenial. My problem was addressed the same day as my scheduled appointment.
Knowledgeable, good service , great customer service from booking with Amanda all the way to having the technicians in my home
Excellent customer service! Took the care and time to patiently explain everything and listen to my needs and concerns and offered multiple options to consider at my own pace.
Edwin and Harold did a great job and explained everything that they needed to fix. Peace of mind is so important with electrical work.
Prompt service, no B.S. Honest people doing honest work, and always very polite and personable. Completely satisfied with their service.
Had Erwin and Harold out for a second time to do more work in our home we are renovating. I have no complaints about this company, they are honest and give plenty of options to work with your budget. Respectful, understanding and very thorough explanation of their work. Highly recommend you get a quote from them before paying double to the larger companies!
Edwin was very informative and respectful. Quick and effective work. Very thorough and good at his job. He discovered that every outlet that was worked on previously by a unlicensed handyman were done incorrectly. My home could have burned down, thankfully i caled a professional. Advised me on what was needed to bring my kitchen oven up to code and accomplished my installation quickly and same day. Estimate was equal to what I paid. Very honest workers and professional experience. 10/10! Will be calling them for everything in the future for electric. They diagnosed the issue, coordinated the work, and had everything fully operational in just two visits. We’re grateful for their efficiency and expertise.
The electricians(Erwin Harold and their crew) did a wonderful job. Erwin explained step by step in details on the things they were going to work on before they did the job. They accommodated everyone in the household especially our autistic son. With all the cosmetic work that had to be done, in the end,it looked like no damage to the house was even done. Thanks to them now we have permanent power instead of partial power. We will definitely recommend them to everyone.
Erwin and Harold from Edinson Electrical Solutions visited us to work on the dishwasher, the circuit breaker panel, outlets and possible installation of a new outlet box in the basement. Erwin was very thorough. He went through all the requirements of what needed to be done and provided options for us to pick. We wound up putting in a new outlet box for the dishwasher (which he diagnosed as needing replacement). He installed a new whole house surge protector at the circuit breaker panel. He fixed a few of the troublesome outlets. We decided not to install the outlet box in the basement at this time. What was impressive was the time he spent explaining the pros and cons of what needed to be done. I appreciated the explanations. They did an outstanding job for us and not was reasonable for the work that was performed.
Erwin and team were great! Provided multiple options for our project so we could decide what works best. It was a large project, upgrading 2 panels, removed 1 meter and went to 200 amps. Communication was great throughout and he made us a priority. We used Edinson for a previous project as well, we will continue to use them and would highly recommend them for a small or large project.

Erwin and Harold did an excellent job replacing many outlets and lights for our remodel. They also upgraded several switches for us. They were very respectful of our house, cleaning up after themselves as they worked. We will be calling them in the future for other work we will need to have done.

I contacted Erwin for help with 2 sub panel installations at my residence and from the moment I called him to the moment he walked off my property it was an example of customer-first professionalism. If you want to have a quality job done, with a friendly, safe and professional electrical contractor, look no further. He handles everything from A to Z and does not consider the job done until the customer is satisfied. I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with him and his team. Outstanding service. If you choose this company, you won’t have any problems
I had a great experience with Edinson Electrical Solutions. They helped make my house much safer by upgrading all the smoke alarms, fixing some wiring issues with my baseboard heaters, and installing a electronic surge protector. Their work was very thorough and professional from start to finish. Juan and his crew were very professional, clean and respectful of our home. They fixed a ceiling fan and installed all new smoke alarm / carbon monoxide detectors, efficiently throughout the house.
We recently purchased our forever home and spent hours searching for a highly reputable electrician to help us with a large project. Erwin is the epitome of professional; he came for the estimate and talked us through every viable option to make major upgrades to our VERY outdated knob and tube electrical system. He was very receptive to our input and made us feel like we put a plan together as a team. His dedication to his clients is very apparent as he followed through with all the work he said he would do within the timeframe he provided; not only that, but he went above and beyond to ensure that we were left feeling safe and secure before he wrapped things up. He completely alleviated all our initial concerns by the time the project was done and has remained in contact to make sure everything has continued running smoothly. It’s rare to find someone that genuinely cares about others in the capacity that he does with the skills to boot. Don’t just take my word for it; give him a call and I guarantee that you will have him on standby for all your current and/or future needs. Keep up the great work!!!

Edwin was awesome. He showed exactly when he said he would and made sure the job was done. Perfect work.
Erwin not only fixed the initial problem that he was called for but probably saved our house from a potential fire hazard by identifying a faulty wired main breaker and evidence of water leaking into our main electrical panel. Erwin is knowledgeable, considerate, and very personable. We would not hesitate to call him again.
Very professional and knowledgeable about the trade. He took the time to explain many alternatives and what his recommendations were for what I needed and provided many quotes to meet my budget. Honest, top tier company.

Prompt, excellent service from an experienced and professional technician. Highly recommended
I’m very impressed with Edinson Co, specifically having worked with Erwin to estimate and assess an older century house’s electrical system. The process was smooth, thorough and actually enjoyable. Erwin is a down to earth guy and will have no problem keeping you aware of what needs to be done work wise, albeit very kind, funny and friendly to talk with. Never once did I feel pressured or unsure about any of his work. The process was simple enough to any homeowner; going off a general inspection and digging even deeper into whatever pops up on the report is exactly what Erwin did. His report was thoroughly informative after taking time checking for GFI circuitry and for k&t. If you have an older house and are interested in finding out what kind of projects you might encounter, Erwin definitely will shed some light on the situation. I am so grateful Erwin was referred to me, being that finding an honest and dedicated electrician is golden nowadays. Thank you so much Erwin!
Erwin arrived on time. The problem was fixed. Very professional. I would call them again

Circuit Breaker Installation Service
Circuit breakers serve as the primary safety device protecting wiring from overcurrent conditions that would otherwise cause overheating and fire. Each breaker is designed to trip when current exceeds its rated capacity for a specific length of time. Standard thermal-magnetic breakers use a bi-metal strip for slow overloads and a magnetic mechanism for instant short-circuit response. The breaker rating must always match the smallest conductor in the circuit because the wire is what the breaker is actually protecting. Installing a 30-amp breaker on a circuit wired with 14-gauge conductor is a serious safety violation that allows the wire to overheat without tripping the breaker. We verify wire gauge before installing or upgrading any breaker on an existing circuit. New circuits are designed from the panel out, with conductor and breaker selected together based on the load. This careful approach prevents the kind of mistakes that lead to fires and equipment damage. Edinson Electrical never cuts corners on breaker sizing because the consequences are too serious.
GFCI breakers, or ground-fault circuit interrupter breakers, protect against shock hazards by detecting tiny imbalances between the hot and neutral conductors. When current leaves the circuit through an unintended path such as a person standing in water, the GFCI trips within milliseconds to prevent injury. Current code requires GFCI protection for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, garages, outdoor receptacles, and several other locations. GFCI breakers provide this protection at the panel rather than at individual receptacles, which can be easier in some installations. We install GFCI breakers when an installation requires whole-circuit protection or when adding GFCI receptacles is impractical. Each GFCI breaker is tested using the integrated test button after installation. We also explain to homeowners how to test their GFCI breakers monthly because the protection only works if the breaker is functioning properly. GFCI breakers cost more than standard breakers, but the safety benefit far exceeds the difference in price. Customers in Allentown benefit from GFCI protection that meets or exceeds current code.
AFCI breakers, or arc-fault circuit interrupter breakers, address a different hazard than GFCI breakers by detecting the electrical signatures of dangerous arcing conditions. Arcing occurs when current jumps across a gap such as a loose connection, a damaged wire, or a deteriorated splice. Arcing generates heat that can ignite surrounding materials and start fires inside walls before any other warning sign appears. AFCI protection is now required by code for bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, family rooms, and most other living spaces in new construction. Dual-function breakers combine AFCI and GFCI protection in a single device, simplifying installation while providing both safety features. We help customers understand which protection their home needs based on current code and the room being served. Older homes that have never had AFCI protection are not required to add it during routine work, but we recommend it during panel upgrades. Adding AFCI protection during a panel replacement is far less expensive than retrofitting it later. This kind of upgrade dramatically improves safety in homes with aging wiring.
Compatibility between breakers and panels is critical because not every breaker fits every panel safely. Each panel manufacturer publishes a list of approved breakers, and using non-listed breakers voids the panel’s UL listing. Insurance companies routinely deny claims when investigations reveal mismatched breakers because the resulting installation is not code-compliant. We never use “classified” breakers as substitutes for manufacturer-listed breakers because the long-term reliability is not equivalent. Square D QO and Homeline, Eaton CH and BR, Siemens QP, and GE THQL lines each require specific breakers designed for those panels. Older panels from manufacturers like Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and Pushmatic present additional challenges because replacement breakers are increasingly hard to find. We discuss panel replacement options with customers whose existing panels have known safety issues. Edinson Electrical installs only breakers approved for the specific panel in question. This attention to compatibility protects the customer in every way that matters.
High-amperage breakers serve large appliances and dedicated circuits such as electric ranges, dryers, water heaters, and HVAC equipment. Two-pole breakers provide 240-volt service by using both legs of the split-phase residential supply. Common ratings include 30-amp for dryers and water heaters, 40-amp or 50-amp for ranges, and various sizes for HVAC equipment based on the manufacturer specifications. We size these breakers based on the equipment data plate, not assumptions about typical loads. Heat pump systems often require breakers sized differently than central air conditioners because of the addition of electric resistance heat strips. Hot tubs, pools, and other large outdoor loads need specific breaker types that include GFCI protection at high amperage. EV chargers add another category of high-amperage breaker installation that has grown rapidly in recent years. Edinson Electrical handles every high-amperage breaker installation with attention to the specific application.
Subpanel breakers and tandem breakers offer ways to expand panel capacity when the main panel is at or near its limit. Tandem breakers, sometimes called duplex or twin breakers, fit two circuits into a single panel slot. Not every panel accepts tandem breakers, and those that do typically limit the number that can be installed. We check panel labeling and manufacturer documentation before adding tandem breakers because exceeding the limit creates a code violation. Subpanels provide a longer-term solution by adding a dedicated panel fed from the main with a high-amperage feeder breaker. The subpanel can be located closer to the loads it serves, reducing conductor length and cost. We help customers decide between tandem breakers and subpanels based on current and future needs. A subpanel is often the better investment when several circuits will be added over time. Both approaches require proper sizing, grounding, and labeling to be safe and code-compliant.
Diagnostic work often precedes breaker installation because a tripping breaker may indicate an underlying problem rather than a failed breaker. We test the circuit for ground faults, short circuits, and overload conditions before assuming the breaker itself is the problem. Replacing a tripping breaker without identifying the root cause is rarely a permanent fix. Our diagnostic process includes inspecting the panel for hot spots, loose connections, and corrosion. We use infrared thermometers and clamp meters to gather objective data rather than relying on guesswork. When the breaker is genuinely failing, we replace it with the correct manufacturer-listed breaker and verify the underlying circuit is healthy. When the breaker is fine but the circuit has a problem, we trace the issue and address it directly. Edinson Electrical solves problems rather than masking them with parts changes. Allentown customers appreciate this thorough, honest approach to electrical service.

The Importance of a Licensed Electrician for Circuit Breaker Installation in Allentown
Hiring a licensed electrician for circuit breaker installation in Allentown is essential because the work happens inside an energized panel where mistakes can be fatal. Even with the main breaker turned off, the service conductors entering the panel remain live unless the utility disconnects them at the meter. Licensed electricians are trained to work safely around these hazards using proper personal protective equipment, insulated tools, and lockout-tagout procedures. They understand which breakers are compatible with which panels, which is information that DIY guides routinely get wrong. Pennsylvania requires licensing for electrical work specifically because of how dangerous improper panel work can be. Insurance companies frequently deny claims involving unlicensed electrical work, leaving homeowners responsible for fire and injury costs. Licensed contractors carry liability insurance that protects customers if something goes wrong during the work. They also stay current on continuing education that covers new breaker technologies, updated code requirements, and known defects in older equipment. Edinson Electrical is fully licensed and insured in the State of Pennsylvania, with the documentation to prove it. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty is possible only because our team has the training to do this work correctly the first time.

We offer financing through Synchrony to make larger electrical projects more manageable for homeowners.

Commonly Asked Circuit Breaker Installation Questions
Circuit breakers are easy to overlook until one fails or until a new circuit needs to be added to the panel. The questions below cover what homeowners in Allentown and across the Lehigh Valley most often want to know before scheduling breaker work.
The cost of installing a circuit breaker depends primarily on the type of breaker, the brand of panel, and whether the installation includes any related circuit work. Standard single-pole breakers in common panel brands are the most affordable option because the breakers themselves are inexpensive and the installation is straightforward. GFCI and AFCI breakers cost more because the devices themselves carry electronics that drive higher manufacturing costs. Dual-function breakers that combine AFCI and GFCI protection are the most expensive type but provide the most complete protection on a single circuit. High-amperage two-pole breakers for ranges, dryers, and HVAC vary based on the rating and the panel brand.
Labor costs are based on the time required to safely access the panel, install the breaker, and test the work. Replacing an existing breaker takes less time than adding a brand new circuit because the conductor and box already exist. Adding a new circuit involves running cable, installing the breaker, and terminating both ends, which adds significantly to the total. Panels that are full or near capacity may require tandem breakers or other workarounds, which affect both time and material. Edinson Electrical provides written estimates so customers know the cost before any work starts. We never start work without confirming the scope and price.
Bundling breaker work with other electrical projects often reduces overall cost because setup, travel, and cleanup are spread across more work. Customers planning a panel upgrade typically benefit from installing modern AFCI and GFCI breakers as part of the project. Financing through Synchrony is available for larger projects that include multiple breakers, panel work, or related upgrades. We explain all pricing clearly without hidden fees or surprise add-ons. Allentown customers appreciate that we price work fairly and stand behind every installation. Our goal is to deliver value, not just a low number on paper. Quality breakers installed correctly save money over the long term by preventing failures and damage.
Several signs indicate that a circuit breaker may need replacement rather than simply being reset after a trip. A breaker that trips frequently under normal load is often weakened from age or repeated overload events. Breakers that feel warm to the touch during normal operation may have loose internal connections or be sized incorrectly for the load. A breaker that fails to reset properly, falls back to the tripped position immediately, or feels mushy when toggled is showing signs of internal failure. Visible damage such as scorch marks, melted plastic, or cracked housing always requires immediate replacement. A licensed electrician can test breakers with specialized equipment to confirm whether they are operating within manufacturer specifications.
Age alone is sometimes a reason to replace a breaker, particularly in panels from manufacturers with known safety issues. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers have a well-documented history of failing to trip during overcurrent conditions, allowing wires to overheat and start fires. Zinsco breakers suffer from similar problems including bus bar corrosion that creates high-resistance connections. Pushmatic breakers, while less hazardous than the others, are increasingly hard to source and lack modern safety features. We recommend panel replacement rather than continued breaker replacement when the underlying panel has known issues. Continuing to invest in a problematic panel rarely makes financial sense.
A tripping breaker should always be investigated before assuming the breaker itself is the problem. Overloaded circuits, short circuits, and ground faults all cause breakers to trip exactly as they are designed to do. Replacing the breaker without finding the underlying cause typically just shifts the problem rather than solving it. Edinson Electrical diagnoses the circuit before recommending breaker replacement, which often saves customers from paying for parts that were not actually defective. When the breaker truly is the problem, we replace it with the correct manufacturer-listed component. Honest diagnosis is part of what makes our customers trust us. Allentown homeowners deserve electricians who solve problems rather than just changing parts.
GFCI and AFCI breakers protect against different electrical hazards and serve different purposes within a home electrical system. GFCI breakers, which stand for ground-fault circuit interrupter, protect people from electric shock by detecting when current is leaving the circuit through an unintended path such as a person’s body. The breaker trips within milliseconds when this imbalance occurs, often preventing serious injury or death. GFCI protection is required in wet or potentially wet locations including bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoor areas, and laundry rooms. The protection works by comparing current flow on the hot and neutral conductors and tripping when they differ by even a few milliamps.
AFCI breakers, which stand for arc-fault circuit interrupter, protect property from fires caused by dangerous arcing conditions in the wiring. Arcing occurs when current jumps across a gap in a damaged or loose connection, generating intense heat that can ignite nearby materials. AFCI breakers use electronic sensors to recognize the unique electrical signatures of dangerous arcs and trip the circuit before a fire can start. Current code requires AFCI protection in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, family rooms, and most other living areas of new homes. The protection is particularly valuable in older homes where aging wiring is more likely to develop arcing problems.
Dual-function breakers combine GFCI and AFCI protection in a single device, providing complete safety coverage on circuits where both hazards are present. These breakers cost more than single-function breakers but eliminate the need to choose between the two protections. Current code requires dual-function protection in some locations including kitchens and laundry rooms. We help customers understand which protection their specific situation requires based on current code and home layout. Edinson Electrical installs the right combination of breakers for each application. Allentown homeowners benefit from electrical systems that meet modern safety standards while supporting the way they actually use their homes.
Installing a circuit breaker is one of the most dangerous DIY electrical projects because it requires working inside a panel with live service conductors. Even when the main breaker is turned off, the conductors entering the panel from the utility remain energized at full voltage. Contact with these conductors can cause severe burns, electrocution, or death. Pennsylvania law and local township ordinances generally require licensed electricians for panel work, and homeowner permits are limited to specific circumstances. The technical knowledge required goes beyond just the physical installation; it includes proper breaker selection, torque specifications, and code compliance verification.
Insurance and liability issues alone make DIY breaker installation a risky decision for most homeowners. Homeowners insurance policies often exclude damage caused by unlicensed electrical work, even when the work was done by the homeowner themselves. A fire traced to an improperly installed breaker can result in a denied insurance claim and significant personal liability. Selling the home later becomes complicated when undocumented panel work is discovered during inspection. Buyers’ inspectors flag non-permitted electrical work, which often requires remediation before closing. The supposed savings of DIY work disappear quickly when these issues surface.
Even competent DIYers often make subtle mistakes that compromise safety without being obvious. Mismatched breakers, incorrect torque on terminals, missing arc-fault protection, and improper conductor connections all create hazards that may not show symptoms until something goes wrong. Edinson Electrical handles every detail correctly, pulls required permits, and provides documentation that protects the customer’s interests. We back our work with a lifetime craftsmanship warranty that no DIY project can match. For Allentown homeowners, hiring a licensed electrician is faster, safer, and more cost-effective in the long run. The peace of mind alone is worth the investment.
A circuit breaker that trips repeatedly is doing exactly what it was designed to do, which means there is a real problem somewhere on the circuit that needs to be identified. The most common cause is simple overload, where too many devices are drawing power on the same circuit at the same time. Kitchen circuits, garage circuits, and bathroom circuits are common offenders because they often serve high-amperage appliances like microwaves, space heaters, and hair dryers. The solution may be as simple as redistributing loads across different circuits or adding a new dedicated circuit for the high-amperage device.
Short circuits and ground faults are more serious causes of breaker tripping that require professional diagnosis. A short circuit occurs when the hot conductor contacts the neutral or another hot conductor, creating an instant high-current path that trips the breaker immediately. A ground fault happens when the hot conductor contacts a grounded surface or a person, which triggers GFCI protection or the standard breaker depending on the circuit. Damaged extension cords, broken appliances, water intrusion, and pest damage to wiring all cause these conditions. We use a megohmmeter to test insulation resistance and identify circuits with hidden damage.
Failing breakers and loose connections account for a significant percentage of repeat tripping calls we receive. Breakers weaken over time from repeated trip events, eventually tripping at lower and lower currents until they become a nuisance. Loose terminal connections at the breaker, at devices on the circuit, or at junction boxes create heat that triggers the breaker’s thermal trip mechanism. We use infrared cameras and clamp meters to identify these problems quickly during diagnostic visits. Edinson Electrical finds the actual cause of tripping rather than just resetting the breaker and hoping for the best. Allentown customers get permanent solutions, not temporary patches. Our diagnostic approach saves money over time by preventing repeated service calls for the same problem.
Circuit breakers from quality manufacturers typically last thirty to forty years under normal operating conditions. Standard thermal-magnetic breakers have relatively simple internal mechanisms that hold up well over decades when they are not subjected to repeated trip events or high ambient temperatures. Breakers that trip frequently age much faster because each trip event causes minor wear on the internal components. A breaker tripping once or twice a year will outlast one tripping weekly by many years. Environmental conditions also affect lifespan, with breakers in damp basements or hot attics aging faster than those in conditioned living spaces.
GFCI and AFCI breakers tend to have shorter lifespans than standard breakers because they contain electronic components that wear over time. The general industry guidance suggests that GFCI and AFCI devices should be tested monthly and replaced when they fail to trip during testing. Most last fifteen to twenty-five years under normal conditions, though some fail sooner from voltage surges or manufacturing defects. The electronics inside these breakers are more sensitive to power quality issues than the simple thermal mechanisms in standard breakers. We recommend testing GFCI and AFCI breakers regularly to confirm they are still providing protection.
Certain breaker brands and panel combinations have known shorter lifespans due to design problems. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers, Zinsco breakers, and certain older Challenger breakers have documented histories of premature failure and unsafe behavior. We recommend replacing these panels and their breakers rather than waiting for failures that may include fires or shocks. Edinson Electrical helps customers understand the condition of their specific panel and breakers during diagnostic visits. Allentown homeowners benefit from honest assessments about whether their breakers are nearing end of life. Replacing breakers before they fail is far less expensive than dealing with the consequences of failure. Proactive maintenance is always cheaper than emergency repair.
Circuit breakers are absolutely not interchangeable between different panel brands, and using the wrong breaker creates serious safety and code violations. Each major manufacturer designs breakers specifically for their panels, with unique mounting clips, bus bar engagement methods, and internal calibrations. Square D QO breakers fit only Square D QO panels, Eaton CH breakers fit only Eaton CH panels, and so on across every manufacturer. Even within a single brand, different product lines such as Square D QO and Square D Homeline are not interchangeable with each other. The panel’s UL listing is voided when non-listed breakers are installed, which means insurance coverage may be compromised.
So-called “classified” breakers marketed as universal replacements have generated significant controversy in the industry. These breakers claim compatibility with multiple panel brands, but most panel manufacturers do not approve them for use in their products. Installing classified breakers may technically work but voids the panel manufacturer’s listing and warranty. Insurance investigators and code inspectors routinely flag classified breakers as code violations. We do not use classified breakers because the long-term liability exposure for the homeowner is not worth the modest cost savings.
Identifying the correct breaker requires checking the panel label, the manufacturer’s website, and sometimes the breaker pattern itself. Older panels from discontinued brands present particular challenges because replacement breakers may be discontinued or counterfeit. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Pushmatic, and certain Challenger panels often need full replacement rather than ongoing breaker replacement. We help customers understand their options when discontinued breakers create ongoing maintenance problems. Edinson Electrical stocks the most common breaker types for major brands so most installations can be completed in a single visit. Allentown homeowners benefit from our experience identifying and sourcing the right breakers for every panel we encounter. The right breaker is always worth the small extra effort to source.
Adding new breakers does not always require replacing the entire panel, though it depends on available space, current panel condition, and total electrical load. Most panels include open slots designed for adding circuits over time, and using these spaces is the simplest way to add a new breaker. We check available space, panel rating, and any restrictions on tandem breakers before recommending an approach. Adding a single circuit to a panel with open space is a routine job that takes a few hours and costs significantly less than a panel replacement. The new breaker is installed in the open slot, the new circuit is wired, and the load is added to the panel directory.
Tandem breakers offer another option when no full-size slots are available but the panel is approved for tandem use. These breakers fit two circuits into a single slot using a special design that maintains proper bus bar engagement. Not every panel accepts tandem breakers, and even approved panels often limit how many can be installed. We verify panel labeling and manufacturer documentation before installing tandem breakers because exceeding the limit is a code violation. When tandem breakers are not allowed or the panel is already at maximum capacity, other options must be considered.
Subpanel installation is the typical solution when a main panel cannot accommodate additional circuits but the service capacity is sufficient. A subpanel is fed from the main with a high-amperage breaker and conductor, then provides additional space for new circuits. Subpanels can be located closer to the loads they serve, which can also reduce wire length and cost. Full panel replacement becomes the right choice when the existing panel is old, undersized, or made by a manufacturer with known safety issues. Edinson Electrical helps customers weigh these options based on current needs and future plans. Allentown homeowners often find that a small upgrade provides decades of additional service. Other times a full replacement is the wiser long-term investment.
