Electrical Grounding
Edinson Electrical provides expert electrical grounding services in Allentown, PA, ensuring residential and commercial electrical systems have the safe fault current paths required by code and good engineering practice.
Professional Electrical Grounding Services
At Edinson Electrical, our professional electrical grounding services address one of the most misunderstood yet essential parts of any electrical system. Our licensed electricians install and verify grounding electrode systems, equipment grounding conductors, bonding jumpers, and supplemental electrodes as required by current code. We test ground resistance using clamp meters and three-point fall-of-potential methods to confirm that grounding systems are actually performing their intended function. Older homes often lack adequate grounding because they were built before modern code requirements, and we bring these systems up to current standards during service upgrades. Bonding of metal water piping, gas piping, and structural steel is part of every complete grounding evaluation we perform. Our team also addresses the differences between grounding and bonding, which are related but distinct concepts that affect system safety. Customers in Allentown, PA trust Edinson Electrical because we explain grounding clearly and install systems that actually work. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty backs every grounding installation we complete. Financing through Synchrony is available for larger projects that combine grounding with panel upgrades or service work.

Edwin & Harold were professional & very congenial. My problem was addressed the same day as my scheduled appointment.
Knowledgeable, good service , great customer service from booking with Amanda all the way to having the technicians in my home
Excellent customer service! Took the care and time to patiently explain everything and listen to my needs and concerns and offered multiple options to consider at my own pace.

Respectful, understanding and very thorough explanation of their work. Highly recommend you get a quote from them before paying double to the larger companies!
Edwin was very informative and respectful. Quick and effective work. Very thorough and good at his job. He discovered that every outlet that was worked on previously by a unlicensed handyman were done incorrectly. My home could have burned down, thankfully i caled a professional. I would recommend him everytime
Erwin did a great job on the lights in are den he was here when he said he would and gave a far price for what he did.
Erwin did an awesome job! Super professional, on time, and really knows what he’s doing. Everything came out great, and he made sure it was done right. They diagnosed the issue, coordinated the work, and had everything fully operational in just two visits. We’re grateful for their efficiency and expertise.
The electricians(Erwin Harold and their crew) did a wonderful job. Erwin explained step by step in details on the things they were going to work on before they did the job. They accommodated everyone in the household especially our autistic son. With all the cosmetic work that had to be done, in the end,it looked like no damage to the house was even done. Thanks to them now we have permanent power instead of partial power. We will definitely recommend them to everyone.
Erwin and Harold from Edinson Electrical Solutions visited us to work on the dishwasher, the circuit breaker panel, outlets and possible installation of a new outlet box in the basement. Erwin was very thorough. He went through all the requirements of what needed to be done and provided options for us to pick. We wound up putting in a new outlet box for the dishwasher (which he diagnosed as needing replacement). He installed a new whole house surge protector at the circuit breaker panel. He fixed a few of the troublesome outlets. We decided not to install the outlet box in the basement at this time. What was impressive was the time he spent explaining the pros and cons of what needed to be done. I appreciated the explanations. They did an outstanding job for us and not was reasonable for the work that was performed.
Erwin and team were great! Provided multiple options for our project so we could decide what works best. It was a large project, upgrading 2 panels, removed 1 meter and went to 200 amps. Communication was great throughout and he made us a priority. We used Edinson for a previous project as well, we will continue to use them and would highly recommend them for a small or large project.

His dedication to his clients is very apparent as he followed through with all the work he said he would do within the timeframe he provided; not only that, but he went above and beyond to ensure that we were left feeling safe and secure before he wrapped things up. He completely alleviated all our initial concerns by the time the project was done and has remained in contact to make sure everything has continued running smoothly. It’s rare to find someone that genuinely cares about others in the capacity that he does with the skills to boot. Don’t just take my word for it; give him a call and I guarantee that you will have him on standby for all your current and/or future needs. Keep up the great work!!!

Electrical Grounding Service
Electrical grounding serves several distinct safety functions that work together to protect people and property. The primary function is providing a low-impedance path for fault current to flow back to the source, which allows breakers and fuses to trip quickly during fault conditions. Without effective grounding, a fault current may not develop enough magnitude to trip protective devices, leaving energized metal parts that can shock anyone who touches them. Grounding also stabilizes the voltage of the electrical system relative to earth, which limits voltage rises during faults and lightning events. The grounded conductor, commonly called the neutral, carries normal return current under typical operation. The grounding electrode conductor connects the system to earth at one point only, while equipment grounding conductors provide fault paths throughout the building. Each piece serves a specific role, and they cannot substitute for each other safely.
The grounding electrode system at the service entrance is the foundation of grounding for the entire building. Code requires at least one grounding electrode, and most installations use multiple electrodes for redundancy and lower resistance. Common electrode types include driven ground rods, concrete-encased electrodes also known as Ufer grounds, metal water pipe electrodes, ground rings, and ground plates. Each electrode type has specific installation requirements that affect both performance and code compliance. Ground rods must be at least eight feet long and driven full depth into the earth, with the top of the rod at or below grade. When a single ground rod has resistance greater than 25 ohms, code requires a second electrode connected to the first by a properly sized grounding electrode conductor. We test resistance during installation to confirm acceptable values.
Bonding of metal piping systems is part of complete grounding installation because these systems can become energized during faults. Metal water piping must be bonded to the grounding electrode system within five feet of where the pipe enters the building. Gas piping bonding requirements have been clarified in recent code cycles, with the equipment grounding conductor of the circuit that may energize the gas piping serving as the bond. Structural steel in commercial buildings often serves as part of the grounding electrode system itself when properly connected. Bonding jumpers must be sized correctly based on the largest grounded conductor or service-entrance conductor, and we follow code tables exactly. Improperly sized bonding jumpers can fail during fault events, which defeats the purpose of the bond. Edinson Electrical installs bonding correctly the first time.
Equipment grounding conductors run alongside circuit conductors throughout the building, providing fault paths from devices and equipment back to the panel. These conductors are typically either bare copper, green insulated, or green with yellow stripes depending on the cable type. The grounding conductor connects to the equipment grounding bar in the panel, which is bonded to the neutral bar at the service entrance and only at the service entrance. Subpanels must have separate neutral and ground bars, with neutral isolated from the enclosure and only the ground bar bonded to the enclosure. This four-wire feeder requirement for subpanels is one of the most commonly missed code requirements during DIY work. We verify these connections during every panel installation and during diagnostic visits when older installations are inspected.
Older homes frequently have grounding deficiencies that may not have been obvious when the home was built but now create safety concerns. Two-prong outlets without ground are common in homes built before grounding became standard practice. Replacement of these outlets with three-prong outlets without actually providing a ground is a code violation and a safety hazard. The correct approach is either to run a new equipment grounding conductor or to install GFCI protection with proper labeling indicating “No Equipment Ground.” Cloth-insulated wiring from the early twentieth century often lacks any equipment grounding conductor at all. We help customers understand the options for upgrading these older systems. Sometimes a complete rewire is the right answer; other times targeted upgrades address the most important areas while leaving lower-priority circuits alone.
Lightning protection and surge mitigation are closely related to grounding because effective grounding is required for both to work properly. Lightning protection systems use down conductors connected to dedicated grounding electrodes specifically designed for the high currents and frequencies of lightning. Whole-house surge protection devices installed at the panel also depend on effective grounding to safely shunt surge currents away from sensitive electronics. We evaluate the grounding system during surge protection installations to confirm it can support the surge protection function. Sometimes ground rods need to be added or replaced to bring resistance values down to acceptable levels for surge protection. Allentown sees its share of summer thunderstorms, and proper grounding is essential for storm protection. Edinson Electrical brings the combination of grounding and surge protection expertise that customers need.
Testing and verification of grounding systems is a service we provide for new installations and as a standalone inspection for existing buildings. Visual inspection of accessible grounding components is part of every comprehensive electrical inspection. Resistance testing requires specialized equipment that most contractors do not carry but that we use routinely. Clamp-on ground resistance meters allow quick testing of individual electrodes without disconnecting them. Three-point fall-of-potential testing provides more thorough analysis but requires temporarily disconnecting the electrode being tested. Both methods produce numerical results that document compliance with code requirements. Edinson Electrical provides written test reports for customers who need documentation for insurance, real estate transactions, or business compliance purposes. Allentown customers benefit from this engineering-grade approach to grounding verification.

The Importance of a Licensed Electrician for Electrical Grounding in Allentown
Hiring a licensed electrician for electrical grounding in Allentown is essential because grounding errors create hidden hazards that may not show symptoms until someone is injured or property is damaged. Grounding systems can appear to work correctly until a fault occurs, at which point the deficiencies become apparent in the worst possible way. Licensed electricians understand the difference between grounding and bonding, two distinct concepts that DIY guides often confuse. They know which electrodes are required by code, how to size grounding conductors based on service size, and how to verify that the installation actually achieves the low resistance values needed for protective devices to operate. Pennsylvania licensing requirements exist specifically because the consequences of grounding errors are so severe and often invisible. Insurance companies investigate grounding after fires and electrical injuries, and unlicensed work can complicate claims significantly. Licensed contractors carry liability insurance that protects customers if problems emerge later. Edinson Electrical is fully licensed and insured in the State of Pennsylvania with the specific training needed for code-compliant grounding work. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty backs every grounding installation, and we provide test documentation when customers need it for verification.

Commonly Asked Electrical Grounding Questions
Electrical grounding is one of the most asked-about topics during service calls because the concept seems abstract until something goes wrong. The questions below cover what homeowners across Allentown and the Lehigh Valley most often want to know about grounding their electrical systems.
Electrical grounding is the intentional connection of an electrical system to earth and to non-current-carrying metal parts so that fault currents can flow safely back to their source. The most important function of grounding is allowing protective devices like breakers and fuses to operate during fault conditions. When a hot conductor contacts a grounded metal enclosure, the resulting fault current must be high enough to trip the breaker quickly, and the only way to achieve this is through a low-impedance ground path. Without proper grounding, the enclosure can become and stay energized, creating a shock hazard for anyone who touches it. This single function alone justifies the time and expense of proper grounding installation.
Grounding also serves additional functions that affect everyday electrical performance and safety. The grounding electrode system stabilizes system voltage relative to earth, which limits how high voltages can rise during faults, lightning events, and utility switching operations. Without this voltage reference, the system would float relative to earth, creating unpredictable shock hazards and damaging sensitive electronics. The connection to earth also provides a path for static electricity to dissipate harmlessly rather than building up to levels that could cause sparks or damage. Surge protection devices depend on effective grounding to shunt surge currents away from connected equipment.
Equipment grounding throughout the building protects users who come into contact with appliances, tools, and devices. The third prong on grounded plugs connects internal metal parts of equipment to the building’s grounding system, providing the fault path that allows breakers to trip if internal insulation fails. A toaster, drill, or lamp with damaged internal insulation becomes safe to touch only when the grounding path actually works. Edinson Electrical installs grounding systems that perform these functions reliably. Allentown customers benefit from grounding installations that have been tested and verified. The investment in proper grounding pays off every day in safer use of electrical equipment.
Several methods help determine whether a home has adequate grounding for current code and safety requirements. Visual inspection of the service entrance reveals whether grounding electrodes are visible and properly connected. A grounding electrode conductor should be visible running from the meter base or service entrance panel to ground rods, water pipe, or other electrodes. The connections should be made with approved clamps that have not corroded, loosened, or come loose. Cloth tape over connections, household wire used as grounding conductors, or missing electrodes are all red flags that warrant professional evaluation. We perform this kind of visual inspection during diagnostic visits.
Outlet testing provides additional information about grounding within the home. A simple three-light outlet tester identifies open grounds, reversed wiring, and several other common faults. More sophisticated testers measure ground impedance and identify high-resistance grounding that could fail during fault conditions. Two-prong outlets in older homes typically indicate the absence of equipment grounding, though some may have ground available at the box that was never connected to the outlet. We can test individual outlets and circuits during inspection visits to map the actual grounding status throughout the home.
The most thorough evaluation is a comprehensive grounding system inspection that includes resistance testing of grounding electrodes. We use clamp-on ground resistance meters to measure the actual resistance of installed electrodes without disconnecting them. This testing identifies whether ground rods are providing low-resistance paths or have deteriorated since installation. Older homes with single ground rods often measure above the 25-ohm code threshold that requires a second rod. Edinson Electrical provides written reports for customers who want documented verification of grounding system condition. Allentown homeowners can request these inspections as standalone services or as part of broader electrical evaluations. Knowing the actual condition of grounding is the first step toward addressing any deficiencies.
Grounding and bonding are related concepts that serve different functions within an electrical system, and the distinction matters for safety and code compliance. Grounding refers to the intentional connection of the electrical system to earth through a grounding electrode system. This connection establishes a reference point for system voltage and provides a path for lightning and other surge currents to dissipate. The grounding electrode conductor and the electrodes themselves accomplish this function at the service entrance. Most homes have a relatively simple grounding electrode system, while commercial buildings may have more complex arrangements with multiple electrodes.
Bonding refers to the intentional connection of non-current-carrying metal parts to each other and to the grounding system. The purpose of bonding is to ensure that all metal parts are at the same electrical potential, eliminating the possibility of shock from touching two metal surfaces at different voltages. Bonding includes connecting metal water piping, gas piping, structural steel, and other metal systems to the grounding electrode conductor or grounding bus. Within the panel, the equipment grounding conductors and the grounded conductor are bonded together at one point only, which is the service entrance. This single bonding point is critical because multiple bonding points create parallel paths for neutral current that can cause shock hazards.
Equipment grounding conductors run throughout the building, providing fault current paths from outlets, switches, and equipment back to the panel. These conductors are technically part of the bonding system because their purpose is to keep metal parts at the same potential rather than to connect to earth. The terminology gets confusing because the equipment grounding conductor connects to the grounding system at the panel, but its function is bonding. Edinson Electrical explains these distinctions during diagnostic visits and installation work so customers understand what their system is actually doing. Allentown homeowners benefit from this clarity because it helps them ask the right questions about their electrical system. Proper grounding and bonding work together to provide the safety that the code requires.
The number of ground rods required depends on the resistance to earth that a single rod achieves and on code provisions that have evolved over time. Current National Electrical Code requires either testing the resistance of a single rod to confirm it is 25 ohms or less, or installing two rods spaced at least six feet apart. Most contractors install two rods by default rather than testing because two rods are typically less expensive than the testing and recordkeeping required to use just one. The two-rod approach also provides redundancy if one rod degrades over time. Both approaches comply with code when implemented correctly.
Local soil conditions significantly affect ground rod resistance and therefore the number of rods needed. Sandy soil, rocky soil, and dry soil all increase resistance compared to clay soil with good moisture content. Areas of Pennsylvania with shallow bedrock sometimes make ground rod installation difficult and may require alternative electrodes such as ground plates or concrete-encased electrodes. We assess soil conditions during installation planning so the right approach is used for each site. Sometimes additional rods beyond the code minimum provide better protection in challenging soil conditions.
Older homes often have single ground rods installed when code only required one electrode regardless of resistance. Adding a second rod during a service upgrade brings the installation up to current code and improves protection. The cost of adding a rod during other electrical work is modest compared to the cost of testing the existing rod and proving it meets requirements. Edinson Electrical typically recommends installing the second rod as part of any service upgrade or major electrical project. Allentown homeowners benefit from this proactive approach because the additional electrode requires no further attention for decades. Good grounding installed once provides lasting protection.
Grounding problems can cause a wide range of appliance malfunctions, equipment damage, and unusual electrical symptoms that are often misdiagnosed. Sensitive electronics like computers, audio equipment, and televisions sometimes exhibit interference, signal problems, or premature failure when grounding is poor or absent. Variable frequency drives, computer power supplies, and switch-mode power supplies generate harmonic currents that can return through unintended paths if grounding and bonding are incorrect. These return currents create noise on neutral conductors that affects connected equipment throughout the home. Improving grounding often resolves problems that seemed unrelated.
Ground loops, where multiple grounding paths create circulating currents, cause specific problems with audio and video equipment. The classic ground loop symptom is hum or buzz on audio equipment that varies depending on which devices are connected. Cable television and internet connections sometimes introduce ground loop problems because the cable ground is a different reference than the building ground. Bonding the cable ground to the building grounding system addresses these issues and is required by code in most installations. We check for ground loop conditions during diagnostic visits when customers describe these symptoms.
Equipment damage from grounding problems can be subtle and progressive. Voltage instability from poor grounding stresses power supplies, capacitors, and other components, shortening their useful life. Surge events that should be dissipated through the grounding system instead pass through equipment, causing immediate failure or accumulated damage that leads to later failure. GFCI receptacles sometimes nuisance trip on circuits with poor grounding because the imbalance threshold is so low that small leakage currents trigger trips. Edinson Electrical diagnoses these complex situations during service visits. Allentown customers benefit from electricians who understand how grounding affects modern electronics. Solving the root cause is always more effective than dealing with repeated equipment failures.
Older homes very often benefit from grounding upgrades because the code requirements have evolved significantly over the past several decades. Homes built before the 1960s frequently lack equipment grounding conductors on branch circuits, with two-prong outlets being the most visible evidence of this deficiency. Homes from the 1960s and 1970s often have some grounding but may have only a single ground rod when modern code would require two electrodes. Cloth-insulated wiring, aluminum branch wiring, and Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels in older homes all create additional concerns that intersect with grounding deficiencies. Comprehensive evaluation reveals what is most important to address.
Several options exist for improving grounding in older homes without complete rewiring. GFCI protection on ungrounded circuits provides shock protection in lieu of an equipment grounding conductor, and code permits this approach with proper labeling. New equipment grounding conductors can be run to outlets when accessible attic, basement, or crawl space construction makes installation practical. Whole-house rewiring is the most comprehensive solution but is also the most expensive and disruptive. We help customers prioritize upgrades based on which circuits serve the most sensitive equipment and the highest shock-risk locations.
Service entrance grounding is usually the first priority during evaluations of older homes because everything else depends on it. Adding a second ground rod, replacing corroded grounding electrode conductors, and bonding metal piping are relatively straightforward improvements that produce significant safety gains. Edinson Electrical addresses these foundational issues first before recommending more extensive work. Allentown customers in older homes appreciate the staged approach that allows budget-conscious upgrades over time. Each stage builds on the previous one toward a fully modern electrical system. The goal is safer use of the electrical system every step of the way.
Grounding installation costs vary widely based on the specific work involved and the condition of the existing system. Adding a single supplemental ground rod with proper grounding electrode conductor is typically a moderate cost when performed as part of other electrical work. Standalone ground rod installation costs more because of the setup, travel, and minimum service charge involved. Complete grounding electrode system installation for a new service includes multiple rods, conductor, bonding to water and gas piping, and connection to the service equipment. The total depends on accessibility of the installation locations and any obstructions that affect the work.
Bonding upgrades for existing systems are another category of grounding work with their own cost structure. Adding bonding to metal water piping, gas piping, or structural steel is relatively inexpensive when the connections are accessible. Inaccessible locations or piping that requires special clamps and longer conductor runs add to the cost. Replacing corroded grounding electrode conductors and clamps is typically straightforward but requires shutting off service briefly during the work. We coordinate with utility companies when service interruption is needed for grounding work at the meter.
Comprehensive grounding system upgrades that include rewiring branch circuits with new equipment grounding conductors are much larger projects. These projects sometimes overlap with kitchen or bathroom renovations because wall access makes the work easier and less disruptive. GFCI upgrade as an alternative to running new ground conductors is significantly less expensive than rewiring but requires installing GFCI protection on each affected circuit. Financing through Synchrony helps spread larger grounding projects across manageable monthly payments. Edinson Electrical provides clear written estimates so Allentown customers understand exactly what their grounding work will cost. The investment in proper grounding pays back in safety, equipment longevity, and peace of mind.
Electrical grounding is absolutely required by code for every electrical system, with very specific requirements about how the grounding must be accomplished. The National Electrical Code dedicates an entire article to grounding and bonding, with detailed rules for grounding electrode systems, equipment grounding conductors, and bonding requirements. Pennsylvania has adopted the NEC with state-specific amendments that apply throughout the Commonwealth, and local jurisdictions add their own requirements in some cases. Compliance with grounding code is non-negotiable for any new installation or significant alteration. Existing installations are generally allowed to remain under the code in effect when they were installed, but additions and modifications must comply with current code.
Permit and inspection requirements typically include grounding verification as part of the inspection process. Inspectors check that grounding electrodes are properly installed, that the grounding electrode conductor is correctly sized and protected, and that bonding connections are in place. Equipment grounding for new circuits is also verified during rough and final inspections. Failure to meet grounding requirements results in failed inspections and required corrections before approval is granted. We pull permits and coordinate inspections for all qualifying work, which ensures grounding is documented as code-compliant.
Code requirements have become more stringent over time as the importance of grounding has been better understood. The 1996 NEC introduced significant changes to grounding requirements, and subsequent code cycles have added further refinements. Two-pole transfer switches, ground-fault protection for various locations, and arc-fault protection all interact with grounding system performance. Modern surge protection devices similarly depend on effective grounding to operate properly. Edinson Electrical stays current with code changes through ongoing training and continuing education. Allentown customers benefit from installations that meet not just basic code minimums but engineering best practices. Code-compliant grounding is the foundation of every safe electrical system.
