Electrical Subpanel Installation

Edinson Electrical provides expert electrical subpanel installation services in Allentown, PA, expanding electrical capacity to garages, basements, additions, outbuildings, and remote areas of homes and businesses.

Professional Electrical Subpanel Installation Services

At Edinson Electrical, our professional electrical subpanel installation services solve capacity and space limitations that develop as electrical needs grow. Our licensed electricians install subpanels in basements for finished living space, in garages for workshops and EV chargers, in detached buildings for shop equipment and outbuilding circuits, and in additions where running individual circuits back to the main panel is impractical. We size feeder conductors based on actual load calculations rather than rules of thumb, with conductor and breaker selection following code tables exactly. Four-wire feeders are used for every subpanel installation because subpanels must have separated neutral and ground buses to operate safely. Our team installs panels from quality manufacturers including Square D, Eaton, and Siemens with attention to neat conductor management and accurate labeling. Customers in Allentown, PA trust Edinson Electrical because we deliver subpanels that pass inspection on the first visit and serve their intended areas reliably. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty backs every subpanel installation we complete. Financing through Synchrony makes subpanel projects manageable when they are part of larger electrical work. Permits and inspections are handled as part of every installation we perform.

The electricians(Erwin Harold and their crew) did a wonderful job. Erwin explained step by step in details on the things they were going to work on before they did the job. They accommodated everyone in the household especially our autistic son. With all the cosmetic work that had to be done, in the end,it looked like no damage to the house was even done. Thanks to them now we have permanent power instead of partial power. We will definitely recommend them to everyone.

Erwin and Harold from Edinson Electrical Solutions visited us to work on the dishwasher, the circuit breaker panel, outlets and possible installation of a new outlet box in the basement. Erwin was very thorough. He went through all the requirements of what needed to be done and provided options for us to pick. We wound up putting in a new outlet box for the dishwasher (which he diagnosed as needing replacement). He installed a new whole house surge protector at the circuit breaker panel. He fixed a few of the troublesome outlets. We decided not to install the outlet box in the basement at this time. What was impressive was the time he spent explaining the pros and cons of what needed to be done. I appreciated the explanations. They did an outstanding job for us and not was reasonable for the work that was performed.

Erwin and team were great! Provided multiple options for our project so we could decide what works best. It was a large project, upgrading 2 panels, removed 1 meter and went to 200 amps. Communication was great throughout and he made us a priority. We used Edinson for a previous project as well, we will continue to use them and would highly recommend them for a small or large project.

We recently purchased our forever home and spent hours searching for a highly reputable electrician to help us with a large project. Erwin is the epitome of professional; he came for the estimate and talked us through every viable option to make major upgrades to our VERY outdated knob and tube electrical system. He was very receptive to our input and made us feel like we put a plan together as a team. His dedication to his clients is very apparent as he followed through with all the work he said he would do within the timeframe he provided; not only that, but he went above and beyond to ensure that we were left feeling safe and secure before he wrapped things up. He completely alleviated all our initial concerns by the time the project was done and has remained in contact to make sure everything has continued running smoothly. It’s rare to find someone that genuinely cares about others in the capacity that he does with the skills to boot. Don’t just take my word for it; give him a call and I guarantee that you will have him on standby for all your current and/or future needs. Keep up the great work!!!

I’m very impressed with Edinson Co, specifically having worked with Erwin to estimate and assess an older century house’s electrical system. The process was smooth, thorough and actually enjoyable. Erwin is a down to earth guy and will have no problem keeping you aware of what needs to be done work wise, albeit very kind, funny and friendly to talk with. Never once did I feel pressured or unsure about any of his work. The process was simple enough to any homeowner; going off a general inspection and digging even deeper into whatever pops up on the report is exactly what Erwin did. His report was thoroughly informative after taking time checking for GFI circuitry and for k&t. If you have an older house and are interested in finding out what kind of projects you might encounter, Erwin definitely will shed some light on the situation. I am so grateful Erwin was referred to me, being that finding an honest and dedicated electrician is golden nowadays. Thank you so much Erwin!

COMPLETED SERVICE CALLS

Electrical Subpanel Installation Service

Electrical subpanel installation begins with a clear understanding of why a subpanel is the right solution for the specific situation. The main panel may be full with no room for additional circuits, in which case a subpanel adds the space needed for expansion. The new electrical area may be far enough from the main panel that running individual circuit conductors would require more wire than running a single feeder to a local subpanel. A detached building requires a subpanel because it has its own structure and benefits from local overcurrent protection and disconnect capability. We discuss the specific situation with each customer to confirm that subpanel is the right approach before recommending the work.

Load calculation determines the appropriate size of the new subpanel and the feeder conductors that supply it. National Electrical Code defines specific methods for calculating loads on subpanels based on the circuits they will serve. The subpanel must be sized to carry the calculated load with appropriate margin for future growth. Feeder conductors must be sized to carry the subpanel’s load rating with proper consideration for voltage drop over the run length. A 60-amp subpanel feeding a garage shop has different requirements than a 100-amp subpanel feeding a finished basement with electric heating. We size every installation specifically rather than using one-size-fits-all assumptions. Right-sizing produces installations that perform reliably without wasting money on oversized components.

Feeder conductor installation is one of the most labor-intensive parts of subpanel installation because the conductors typically run a significant distance from the main panel to the subpanel location. Copper conductors are common for residential subpanels because copper handles heat well and provides reliable terminations. Aluminum conductors are sometimes used for longer runs to manage cost, though aluminum requires anti-oxidant compound and specific termination methods. The conductors run inside conduit, MC cable, or other appropriate wiring methods based on the route and conditions. Underground runs to detached buildings use direct burial cable or conductors in PVC conduit buried at code-required depths. We pull feeders carefully to avoid damaging the insulation and ensure proper terminations at both ends.

Four-wire feeders are required for subpanels because code requires separated neutral and ground buses in subpanels. The four conductors include two ungrounded conductors for 240-volt service, one neutral conductor sized appropriately for the largest neutral load, and one equipment grounding conductor sized per code tables. The neutral conductor connects to an isolated neutral bus in the subpanel, while the equipment grounding conductor connects to the equipment grounding bus. The bonding screw or jumper that ties neutral to ground in the main panel must not be installed in the subpanel. This four-wire approach prevents parallel neutral current paths that would otherwise create shock hazards.

Subpanel selection follows similar logic to main panel selection, with panel size and brand chosen based on application requirements. Square D Homeline and QO panels both serve well as subpanels in their respective tiers. Eaton CH and BR provide similar options. Siemens panels are reliable choices for many subpanel applications. The number of circuit positions in the subpanel should accommodate the planned circuits with room for future expansion. A subpanel that fills up immediately provides no advantage over running individual circuits back to the main panel. We recommend subpanels with enough capacity to serve actual needs and reasonable growth.

Branch circuits originating from the subpanel work the same way as branch circuits from the main panel, with breakers protecting conductors that serve outlets, switches, lights, and fixed appliances. The subpanel circuits include all the same code requirements that apply to circuits from the main panel including AFCI and GFCI protection where required by the location and circuit type. Bathroom circuits in finished basements need GFCI protection. Bedroom circuits in basement living areas need AFCI protection. Kitchen circuits need dual-function protection. We install code-compliant protection on every circuit from the subpanel because code does not relax for circuits originating from subpanels.

Final connections and testing complete the subpanel installation before service is restored. Feeder breaker selection at the main panel must match the subpanel rating and feeder conductor capacity. The subpanel main breaker, when present, provides local disconnect capability for the entire subpanel. We test for proper voltage, polarity, and grounding before energizing branch circuits served by the subpanel. Panel directories are created accurately during installation rather than filled in haphazardly later. Edinson Electrical documents subpanel installations with photos and written notes that customers retain for their records. Allentown customers receive installations that meet code, serve their intended areas reliably, and support future expansion as needs evolve. The subpanel becomes a long-term electrical asset rather than just an immediate expedient.

The Importance of a Licensed Electrician for Electrical Subpanel Installation in Allentown

Hiring a licensed electrician for electrical subpanel installation in Allentown is essential because the work involves significant electrical capacity and specific code requirements that DIY work routinely gets wrong. Subpanel installation requires properly sized feeder conductors, four-wire feeders with separated neutral and ground, correct breaker sizing at both the main and subpanel, and proper grounding for the specific application. Each of these requirements has detailed code provisions that licensed electricians understand from training and experience. Mistakes create real hazards including shock risks from improperly bonded neutrals and fire risks from undersized conductors. Pennsylvania requires licensing for this kind of work specifically because of the safety implications. Insurance companies investigate subpanel installations after fires and electrical incidents, and unlicensed work can result in denied claims. Permits cannot be pulled by unlicensed individuals, and inspections fail when work has been performed without proper credentials. Licensed contractors carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation that protects customers throughout the project. Edinson Electrical is fully licensed and insured in the State of Pennsylvania with extensive subpanel installation experience. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty backs every installation we complete, and we provide the documentation customers need for their property records.

Commonly Asked Electrical Subpanel Installation Questions

Subpanel installation comes up most often when property owners are expanding electrical capacity for specific projects like finishing a basement, building a workshop, or adding a detached structure. The questions below cover what customers across Allentown most often ask before scheduling subpanel work.

Several situations make subpanel installation the right solution rather than other approaches to electrical expansion. A main panel that is full with no room for additional breakers is one of the most common reasons. When physical breaker space is the limitation rather than total service capacity, a subpanel adds the space needed for expansion without requiring a full main panel replacement. Detached buildings including garages, sheds, and workshops typically need subpanels because individual circuit runs from the main panel are impractical and code generally requires a disconnect at the detached structure.

Distance from the main panel is another factor that often drives subpanel installation. Finished basements, room additions, and accessory dwelling units typically benefit from local subpanels because the cost of running individual circuits from a distant main panel exceeds the cost of running a single feeder to a local subpanel. The subpanel then feeds the local branch circuits with much shorter runs. This approach also makes troubleshooting easier because circuit identification stays local to the area being served.

Specific high-demand projects sometimes justify subpanel installation independent of distance or main panel space. EV charger installations, hot tubs, and shop equipment with multiple high-amperage circuits all benefit from local subpanels that simplify wiring and provide organized circuit grouping. Future expansion plans also factor into subpanel decisions because installing capacity for known future needs costs less during initial work than retrofitting later. Edinson Electrical helps Allentown customers think through these considerations during project planning. The right approach depends on specific circumstances, and we explain options clearly so customers can make informed decisions.

Subpanel installation costs depend on the subpanel size, feeder run length, and complexity of the installation. A basic 60-amp or 100-amp subpanel installed close to the main panel with short feeder runs falls within a moderate price range that includes panel, feeder conductors, breakers, permit, and inspection. Larger subpanels at 125-amp or 200-amp ratings cost more because of the larger feeder conductors and panel itself. Long feeder runs through finished walls, ceilings, or across long distances add significantly to labor cost.

Several variables affect subpanel pricing beyond the basic equipment. Underground feeder runs to detached buildings add excavation and conduit work to the project. Finished spaces around the subpanel location may require drywall cutting and patching. The specific feeder conductor type and size affects material cost, with copper costing more than aluminum but providing more reliable terminations. Conduit type and supports vary based on the route, with some installations requiring rigid conduit while others can use less expensive options.

Branch circuits originating from the subpanel add to the total project cost when they are installed at the same time. Installing branch circuits during the same project usually costs less than coming back later because setup, travel, and inspection coordination are shared across the work. We provide detailed written estimates that itemize panel, feeder, and branch circuit work separately so customers understand exactly what they are paying for. Financing through Synchrony helps when subpanel work is part of a larger project. Edinson Electrical prices work fairly and transparently. Allentown customers value the clear pricing that supports informed decisions about their electrical expansion projects.

Subpanel size is determined by load calculation rather than by guesswork, with the calculation specific to the circuits the subpanel will serve. Code defines specific methods for calculating subpanel loads based on the circuits and equipment connected. A subpanel feeding a garage workshop with hand tools and lighting has very different requirements than one feeding a finished basement with electric heating, kitchenette, and home theater. We perform the calculation during project planning to size both the panel and the feeder appropriately.

Common subpanel sizes for residential applications include 60-amp, 100-amp, and 125-amp ratings. Smaller subpanels at 30-amp or 40-amp ratings sometimes serve simple applications like shed lighting and a few outlets. Larger subpanels at 200-amp ratings serve detached buildings with significant electrical demand, accessory dwelling units, and major additions to existing homes. The size should match actual needs with reasonable margin for growth rather than just matching what seems convenient.

Future expansion deserves consideration during initial sizing because increasing subpanel capacity later involves either replacing the subpanel or adding another subpanel. The incremental cost of installing slightly larger capacity during initial installation is typically modest compared to the cost of upgrading later. Customers planning EV charger installation, workshop expansion, or other significant future additions benefit from sizing the subpanel for those future needs. Edinson Electrical helps Allentown customers think through both current and future needs during project planning. The right size supports the area served well for decades to come without unnecessary upfront expense.

A typical residential subpanel installation takes between four and eight hours depending on the run length, accessibility, and any related work. Short feeder runs in unfinished basements or accessible attics fall on the shorter end of that range. Longer runs through finished spaces or to detached buildings extend the timeline because of the additional time required for routing and connection. Underground runs to detached structures take significantly longer because of the excavation, conduit installation, and inspection requirements.

The installation involves several distinct phases that contribute to total project time. Feeder routing and installation accounts for a major portion of the labor on longer runs. Conduit assembly, conductor pulling, and termination at both ends each take their own time. Subpanel mounting and connection of the feeder is relatively quick when the work is accessible. Adding branch circuits from the subpanel takes additional time per circuit based on each circuit’s complexity and run length.

Service interruption during subpanel installation is typically brief compared to main panel work. The main panel must be deenergized while feeder conductors are landed on the new feeder breaker, but this connection is typically the only significant interruption. Subpanel branch circuits can be wired and tested with the subpanel energized once feeder connections are complete. We schedule interruption to minimize disruption to the customer’s daily activities. Edinson Electrical communicates expected timelines clearly so customers can plan around the work. Allentown customers appreciate the efficient project completion and minimal disruption. Most subpanel installations are completed in a single day with inspection scheduled for the following business day.

Subpanels in detached buildings are common installations that serve garages, sheds, workshops, and similar structures. The detached subpanel typically receives feeder power through an underground feeder or in some cases through overhead conductors. Underground installations use direct burial cable or conductors in conduit buried at code-required depths. Overhead installations are less common in modern construction but exist on older properties. We install detached building subpanels with attention to code requirements specific to this application.

Code requirements for detached building subpanels include several considerations beyond standard subpanel installation. A disconnect is required at the detached structure, which is typically provided by the subpanel’s main breaker. Grounding requirements depend on whether the detached building has its own grounding electrode or relies on the equipment grounding conductor in the feeder. Current code generally allows the equipment grounding conductor approach for residential outbuildings, but some inspectors interpret the requirements differently. We work with the local inspector to confirm requirements before installation.

Underground feeder installation involves specific code requirements that affect cost and complexity. Direct burial cable rated for underground use can be installed in a trench at code-required depth, typically 24 inches for residential applications. Conductors in PVC conduit can be buried at shallower depths in many cases. Frost line considerations affect specific installation choices in our climate. We coordinate excavation as part of the project and arrange any required call-before-you-dig services. Edinson Electrical handles detached building subpanel installations completely. Allentown property owners benefit from comprehensive project management that addresses all the related considerations.

The main panel and subpanels serve different roles within the overall electrical system, with specific code requirements that distinguish them. The main panel is fed directly from the utility service entrance and contains the main service disconnect. The main panel is also the point where the neutral conductor is bonded to the equipment grounding system through a main bonding jumper. This single bonding point establishes the reference for the entire electrical system and creates the fault current path that allows breakers to trip during ground faults.

Subpanels are fed from the main panel through a feeder rather than directly from the utility. Subpanels have an isolated neutral bus that is not bonded to the equipment grounding system within the subpanel. The neutral and ground references are maintained through the four-wire feeder back to the main panel where the bonding actually occurs. This isolation prevents parallel neutral current paths that would create shock hazards and circulating currents.

Functionally, subpanels operate the same way as main panels for the circuits they serve. Breakers protect branch circuits, conductors deliver power to devices and equipment, and overload conditions trip breakers exactly as they do at the main panel. The wiring methods, breaker types, and circuit requirements apply equally to subpanel circuits. The main differences are at the panel-level connections rather than at the circuit level. Edinson Electrical installs subpanels that meet all these code requirements correctly. Allentown customers benefit from installations that pass inspection and provide reliable service to the areas they feed.

Subpanel installation requires permits in every jurisdiction across the Lehigh Valley because the work involves significant electrical changes that affect safety. The permit process protects property owners by requiring the work to be inspected and documented as code-compliant. This documentation matters for insurance coverage, property sales, and any future electrical work that connects to the subpanel. We pull permits as part of every subpanel installation we perform, handling the paperwork and coordination so customers do not need to navigate the process themselves.

The permit and inspection process typically involves rough and final inspections. Rough inspection happens after the panel is installed, feeder conductors are in place, and connections are made, but before any cover plates or covers are installed. The inspector verifies feeder conductor sizing, breaker selection, neutral and ground separation, grounding methods, and overall workmanship. Final inspection happens after any branch circuits from the subpanel are complete and the installation is ready for use.

Different townships across the Lehigh Valley have somewhat different permit and inspection processes. Some jurisdictions offer next-day inspections, while others require longer scheduling lead times. Permit fees vary modestly but are generally proportional to project scope. Subpanels feeding detached buildings sometimes require additional permits beyond the basic electrical permit, including building permits for new structures or building modifications. Edinson Electrical maintains good working relationships with inspectors across the area because consistent code-compliant work earns their trust. Allentown customers benefit from this experience because permits and inspections rarely delay our projects. The result is smooth project completion and proper documentation for property records.

Subpanels can absolutely be installed outdoors when the panel enclosure is rated for the outdoor environment. NEMA 3R is the most common rating for outdoor electrical equipment in our climate, providing protection against rain and dust while allowing convection cooling. Stainless steel or specially coated panels offer additional corrosion resistance for harsh environments. We install outdoor subpanels with attention to weatherproofing details including conduit fittings, sealing washers, and proper mounting to avoid water entry.

Outdoor subpanel applications include pool equipment, hot tub controls, outdoor kitchens, irrigation systems, and detached building services. Each application has specific code requirements that affect installation details. Pool and hot tub subpanels need GFCI protection and bonding requirements specific to those applications. Outdoor kitchens typically need weather-resistant receptacles and GFCI protection on outdoor circuits. Irrigation systems may need specific control wiring methods. We address these application-specific requirements during installation planning.

Maintenance considerations differ for outdoor subpanels compared to indoor installations. Outdoor panels face thermal cycling, weather exposure, and potential physical damage that indoor panels avoid. Periodic inspection of outdoor panels identifies developing problems before they cause failures. Sealing around conduit penetrations needs attention over the years because sealants degrade with weather exposure. Edinson Electrical installs outdoor subpanels with attention to long-term durability. Allentown property owners benefit from outdoor electrical installations that withstand our weather conditions reliably. Quality installation produces years of dependable service.
