Electrical Inspection
Edinson Electrical provides thorough electrical inspection services in Allentown, PA, giving homeowners a clear, documented picture of their electrical system’s safety and code compliance.
Professional Electrical Inspection Services
At Edinson Electrical, our professional electrical inspection services give customers the information they need to make informed decisions about their property. Our licensed electricians perform inspections for home purchases, insurance requirements, pre-renovation planning, post-storm damage assessment, code compliance verification, and routine preventive maintenance. We use infrared thermometers, circuit analyzers, ground resistance meters, and outlet testers to gather objective data rather than relying on visual inspection alone. Every inspection begins with the service entrance and works systematically through the panel, branch circuits, devices, and fixtures throughout the property. We document findings with photographs and written descriptions that explain what we observed and why it matters. Customers in Allentown, PA appreciate that we explain findings in plain language rather than burying problems in technical jargon. Our reports distinguish between immediate safety hazards, code violations, and recommended improvements so customers can prioritize action appropriately. Edinson Electrical provides honest, thorough inspections without pressure to perform unnecessary work. Financing through Synchrony is available when inspection findings lead to larger repair projects.

They diagnosed the issue, coordinated the work, and had everything fully operational in just two visits. We’re grateful for their efficiency and expertise.
The electricians(Erwin Harold and their crew) did a wonderful job. Erwin explained step by step in details on the things they were going to work on before they did the job. They accommodated everyone in the household especially our autistic son. With all the cosmetic work that had to be done, in the end,it looked like no damage to the house was even done. Thanks to them now we have permanent power instead of partial power. We will definitely recommend them to everyone.
Erwin and Harold from Edinson Electrical Solutions visited us to work on the dishwasher, the circuit breaker panel, outlets and possible installation of a new outlet box in the basement. Erwin was very thorough. He went through all the requirements of what needed to be done and provided options for us to pick. We wound up putting in a new outlet box for the dishwasher (which he diagnosed as needing replacement). He installed a new whole house surge protector at the circuit breaker panel. He fixed a few of the troublesome outlets. We decided not to install the outlet box in the basement at this time. What was impressive was the time he spent explaining the pros and cons of what needed to be done. I appreciated the explanations. They did an outstanding job for us and not was reasonable for the work that was performed.
Erwin and team were great! Provided multiple options for our project so we could decide what works best. It was a large project, upgrading 2 panels, removed 1 meter and went to 200 amps. Communication was great throughout and he made us a priority. We used Edinson for a previous project as well, we will continue to use them and would highly recommend them for a small or large project.

Erwin and Harold did an excellent job replacing many outlets and lights for our remodel. They also upgraded several switches for us. They were very respectful of our house, cleaning up after themselves as they worked. We will be calling them in the future for other work we will need to have done.

I contacted Erwin for help with 2 sub panel installations at my residence and from the moment I called him to the moment he walked off my property it was an example of customer-first professionalism. If you want to have a quality job done, with a friendly, safe and professional electrical contractor, look no further. He handles everything from A to Z and does not consider the job done until the customer is satisfied. I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with him and his team. Outstanding service. If you choose this company, you won’t have any problems
I had a great experience with Edinson Electrical Solutions. They helped make my house much safer by upgrading all the smoke alarms, fixing some wiring issues with my baseboard heaters, and installing a electronic surge protector. Their work was very thorough and professional from start to finish. I’m extremely satisfied with the job they did and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for honest, high quality electrical work.
Juan and his crew were very professional, clean and respectful of our home. They fixed a ceiling fan and installed all new smoke alarm / carbon monoxide detectors, efficiently throughout the house.
We recently purchased our forever home and spent hours searching for a highly reputable electrician to help us with a large project. Erwin is the epitome of professional; he came for the estimate and talked us through every viable option to make major upgrades to our VERY outdated knob and tube electrical system. He was very receptive to our input and made us feel like we put a plan together as a team. His dedication to his clients is very apparent as he followed through with all the work he said he would do within the timeframe he provided; not only that, but he went above and beyond to ensure that we were left feeling safe and secure before he wrapped things up. He completely alleviated all our initial concerns by the time the project was done and has remained in contact to make sure everything has continued running smoothly. It’s rare to find someone that genuinely cares about others in the capacity that he does with the skills to boot. Don’t just take my word for it; give him a call and I guarantee that you will have him on standby for all your current and/or future needs. Keep up the great work!!!

Edwin was awesome. He showed exactly when he said he would and made sure the job was done. Perfect work.
Erwin not only fixed the initial problem that he was called for but probably saved our house from a potential fire hazard by identifying a faulty wired main breaker and evidence of water leaking into our main electrical panel. Erwin is knowledgeable, considerate, and very personable. We would not hesitate to call him again.
Very professional and knowledgeable about the trade. He took the time to explain many alternatives and what his recommendations were for what I needed and provided many quotes to meet my budget. Honest, top tier company.

Prompt, excellent service from an experienced and professional technician. Highly recommended
I’m very impressed with Edinson Co, specifically having worked with Erwin to estimate and assess an older century house’s electrical system. The process was smooth, thorough and actually enjoyable. Erwin is a down to earth guy and will have no problem keeping you aware of what needs to be done work wise, albeit very kind, funny and friendly to talk with. Never once did I feel pressured or unsure about any of his work. The process was simple enough to any homeowner; going off a general inspection and digging even deeper into whatever pops up on the report is exactly what Erwin did. His report was thoroughly informative after taking time checking for GFI circuitry and for k&t. If you have an older house and are interested in finding out what kind of projects you might encounter, Erwin definitely will shed some light on the situation. I am so grateful Erwin was referred to me, being that finding an honest and dedicated electrician is golden nowadays. Thank you so much Erwin!
Erwin arrived on time. The problem was fixed. Very professional. I would call them again

Electrical Inspection Service
The main electrical panel is the heart of your home’s wiring system, and it is the first thing our electricians evaluate during an inspection. We open the panel cover and examine the bus bars, breakers, neutral lugs, and grounding connections for signs of trouble. Burned insulation, melted plastic, and discoloration on metal surfaces all point to past or ongoing overheating. Double-tapped breakers, where two conductors share a single lug, violate code in most situations and need correction. We check for proper breaker sizing relative to the conductors they protect. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco, and certain Challenger panels have documented failure histories that warrant replacement. Knockout fillers, missing breakers, and unsecured cables all get noted in the report. Our team verifies that the panel rating matches the service entrance capacity. Bonding between the neutral and ground in the main panel must be correct, with subpanels handled differently. Every observation goes into the final documentation.
Branch circuit wiring inspection covers the conductors running through walls, ceilings, and floors to outlets, switches, and fixtures throughout the home. We sample receptacles in each room using a circuit analyzer that detects reversed polarity, open grounds, and bootleg ground connections. GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, and outdoor locations gets tested with the unit’s built-in button and an external tester. AFCI breakers in bedrooms and living areas receive the same treatment to confirm proper function. Older homes often reveal aluminum branch wiring, knob-and-tube remnants, or ungrounded two-prong outlets. We identify each condition and explain the implications for safety and insurance. Junction boxes hidden in walls without covers, also called buried splices, are flagged as code violations. Conductors run through joists without proper protection get noted. Wire fill in conduit and boxes gets checked against allowable limits. The inspection report includes a circuit-by-circuit summary where access permits.
Grounding and bonding systems often receive less attention than they deserve, but they are critical for safety during fault conditions and lightning events. Our electricians trace the grounding electrode conductor from the panel to its termination at a ground rod, water pipe, or both. Connections to ground rods must be made with approved clamps below grade or accessible above grade. Cold water pipe bonding within five feet of entry into the building is required by code. Gas line bonding has become standard in newer construction and gets verified during the inspection. Corroded clamps, broken conductors, and missing bonds all show up during a thorough examination. Subpanels need a separate equipment grounding conductor and isolated neutral bar. Pools, hot tubs, and outdoor equipment have their own bonding requirements that we evaluate when present. Properly grounded systems trip breakers quickly during a fault, protecting people and property. Documentation includes photos of every grounding element we can access.
Outlets and switches throughout the home get individual attention during a comprehensive inspection. We remove cover plates on a sampling of devices to examine the conductors, terminals, and box conditions behind them. Backstabbed connections, where wires are pushed into spring-loaded holes, fail more often than screw terminals and get noted when found. Aluminum wiring connected to standard devices without proper antioxidant treatment and CO/ALR-rated equipment is a fire hazard. Cracked, painted-over, or scorched receptacles need replacement. Tamper-resistant outlets are required in dwelling units built or renovated under recent code cycles. Weather-resistant outlets with in-use covers are mandated for outdoor locations. Switches that feel hot, click oddly, or fail to operate consistently signal internal damage. Three-way and four-way switch circuits get tested for correct operation at every control point. Every device location gets logged for the report.
Light fixtures, ceiling fans, and other permanently installed equipment all fall under the scope of an electrical inspection. We check for proper box ratings, since standard outlet boxes cannot support ceiling fans without a fan-rated assembly. Fixture connections inside the canopy or junction box get evaluated when safely accessible. Recessed cans rated for insulation contact, called IC-rated, are the only acceptable type buried in insulated ceilings. Older non-IC cans surrounded by blown-in insulation create fire risks that need correction. Bathroom exhaust fans must vent to the exterior, not into attic spaces, though this overlaps with mechanical inspection. Outdoor lighting circuits get tested for proper GFCI protection where required. Landscape lighting transformers, low-voltage runs, and pool lighting all have specific code requirements. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms get verified for presence, type, and interconnection per code. Findings get summarized in a dedicated section of the report.
Older homes throughout Hokendauqua and the surrounding Lehigh Valley communities often have layered wiring from multiple eras. A house built in the 1920s may contain original knob-and-tube, 1960s aluminum branch circuits, 1980s romex additions, and recent updates by previous owners. Each generation of wiring has different safety profiles and code implications. Our electricians take time to identify each system present in the home. Knob-and-tube wiring lacks a grounding conductor and cannot be buried in insulation per current code. Cloth-jacketed conductors from the mid-century era often have brittle insulation that crumbles when disturbed. Aluminum branch wiring from the late 1960s and early 1970s requires special handling at every termination. We document these conditions clearly so homeowners understand what they own. Repairs and upgrades can be prioritized based on actual risk rather than guesswork.
Real estate transactions are one of the most common reasons people request an electrical inspection, and our reports are designed to support that process. Home inspectors typically perform a surface-level review without opening panels or testing every device. A dedicated electrical inspection goes deeper and produces documentation that buyers, sellers, and agents can rely on. We work efficiently to meet inspection contingency deadlines without sacrificing thoroughness. Cost estimates for recommended repairs help with negotiation and budgeting. Buyers can move forward with confidence, knowing exactly what they are acquiring. Sellers benefit from pre-listing inspections that surface issues before they derail a deal. Insurance companies sometimes require inspection documentation for older homes or those with specific panel brands. Our reports satisfy these requirements when they apply. Every inspection ends with a conversation about findings and next steps.

The Importance of a Licensed Electrician for Electrical Inspection in Allentown
A licensed electrician brings training, experience, and legal authority to the inspection process that an unlicensed person simply cannot match. Pennsylvania licensing requires documented apprenticeship hours, examination, and ongoing education in the National Electrical Code. Licensed professionals know which conditions are actual hazards versus cosmetic concerns. They can distinguish between obsolete materials that are still safe and outdated installations that need immediate attention. Insurance carriers and mortgage lenders often require inspection reports from licensed electricians for older homes or specific panel brands. Code interpretations vary between editions, and a licensed electrician knows which version applied when your home was built or last permitted. Recommendations from a licensed source carry weight in real estate negotiations and legal matters. Unlicensed inspectors lack the authority to pull permits for any follow-up repair work they identify. Edinson Electric carries full Pennsylvania licensing and liability insurance for every job we perform. Hokendauqua homeowners get peace of mind knowing their inspection meets professional standards.

Commonly Asked Electrical Inspection Questions
Electrical inspections answer many questions about property condition, but they also generate questions of their own about scope, timing, and findings. The questions below cover what homeowners across the Lehigh Valley most often ask before scheduling an electrical inspection.
Several specific situations warrant an electrical inspection from a licensed electrician beyond routine preventive evaluation. Home purchases are one of the most common reasons because buyers want to understand what they are inheriting before closing. Standard home inspections include limited electrical evaluation, but they cannot match the depth of a dedicated electrical inspection. Older homes especially benefit from electrical inspections during the purchase process because the systems may have been modified, expanded, or compromised over decades. Sellers sometimes order inspections proactively to identify and address issues before buyers raise them as negotiation points. The inspection provides documented confidence to both sides of the transaction.
Insurance-driven inspections are another common reason for evaluating electrical systems. Some insurance companies require electrical inspections before issuing or renewing coverage on older homes. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and similar panels often trigger insurance company requirements for inspection or remediation. Knob-and-tube wiring and aluminum branch wiring also commonly prompt insurance attention. We perform inspections that meet insurance company requirements and provide the documentation they need. Sometimes our findings allow customers to maintain existing coverage; other times the findings indicate that repairs are needed before coverage can continue.
Renovation planning benefits enormously from electrical inspection because the condition of existing systems affects renovation decisions. Adding rooms, finishing basements, upgrading kitchens, and similar projects often require modifications to electrical systems. Knowing the panel capacity, existing circuit conditions, and grounding system status before designing the project saves time and money. We perform these inspections with renovation context in mind, identifying what the existing system can support and what would need to be upgraded. Storm damage assessment is another reason customers schedule inspections, particularly after thunderstorms with nearby lightning strikes. Edinson Electrical responds to these situations promptly. Allentown customers benefit from prompt, thorough evaluation when timing matters.
Electrical inspection pricing varies based on the scope of work, the size of the property, and the level of detail required in the final report. Basic safety inspections for smaller homes typically fall at the lower end of the pricing range. Comprehensive inspections covering every accessible component, including thermal imaging and detailed documentation, command higher fees because of the additional time and equipment involved. Pre-purchase inspections for real estate transactions often include written reports formatted for negotiation purposes. Insurance-mandated inspections focused on specific issues like Federal Pacific panels or aluminum wiring are usually priced separately. Edinson Electric provides transparent pricing during the initial conversation so there are no surprises. Quotes account for travel within our service area, equipment use, and report preparation time.
Additional services can affect the total cost when bundled with an inspection. Outlet replacement, GFCI installation, minor repairs, or panel labeling can sometimes be completed during the same visit at reduced overall cost. Customers who plan to address findings often save money by scheduling repairs at the time of inspection rather than as separate trips. Detailed estimates for recommended repairs are included in the inspection report at no extra charge. Major repairs like panel replacement or rewiring projects receive separate detailed proposals. Financing options through Synchrony are available for larger projects that result from inspection findings. Our team works with homeowners to prioritize repairs based on actual safety risk and budget.
Hidden costs from electrical problems often dwarf the price of a professional inspection. A single electrical fire can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage, plus the irreplaceable loss of personal belongings and family safety. Insurance claims involving electrical issues frequently get denied when unlicensed work or unaddressed hazards are discovered. Home sales sometimes fall apart when electrical problems surface late in the closing process. Investing a few hundred dollars in a professional inspection protects much larger financial interests. Hokendauqua homeowners benefit from understanding their electrical system before problems force the issue. Our pricing reflects the value of thorough, documented professional work. Free estimates are available for any project that follows from the inspection findings.
Electrical inspectors examine many specific items during a thorough inspection, all of which contribute to overall system safety and code compliance. The service entrance receives detailed attention because it is the foundation of the electrical system. Meter base condition, service entrance conductor type and condition, weatherhead integrity, and service mast support all factor into the evaluation. Service grounding is verified with attention to the grounding electrode conductor, electrodes, and bonding connections. Service capacity is documented and compared to the apparent load demand on the property.
Panel evaluation is one of the most detailed portions of any inspection because the panel reveals much about overall system condition. We check the panel manufacturer and model for known issues, examine the interior for hot spots and corrosion, verify proper breaker sizing for connected conductors, and confirm that the panel directory is accurate. Double-tapped breakers, mismatched breakers, and overstuffed panels are common findings that require attention. Surge protection presence and proper installation are noted. Subpanel installations are verified for proper four-wire feeders and isolated neutral configurations.
Branch circuits, devices, and fixtures throughout the property are inspected systematically. Outlet polarity, grounding, and GFCI function are tested where required. Switches, dimmers, and special purpose devices are checked for proper operation. Light fixtures are examined for proper installation, especially in damp or wet locations. Smoke and carbon monoxide detector installation is verified. Specialty systems including EV chargers, generators, solar systems, and pool electrical equipment receive attention specific to their requirements. Edinson Electrical documents all findings in clear written reports. Allentown customers receive comprehensive information about their electrical system condition. The report becomes a roadmap for any needed corrections.
A standard residential electrical inspection typically takes between two and four hours, depending on the size of the home and the complexity of the electrical system. Smaller homes with straightforward wiring can sometimes be completed in under two hours. Larger properties with finished basements, detached garages, pool equipment, or extensive outdoor lighting take longer because there is simply more to evaluate. Our electricians do not rush through the process; thoroughness matters more than speed when safety is the goal. The inspection includes the main panel, subpanels, a representative sample of outlets and switches, fixtures, grounding systems, and any specialty equipment. Time also gets allocated for photography, documentation, and report preparation. Homeowners are welcome to walk along and ask questions during the inspection.
The age and condition of the home significantly affect inspection duration as well. A newer home built within the last fifteen years usually has cleaner, more accessible wiring that moves the process along quickly. Older homes with multiple generations of wiring require careful identification and documentation of each system present. Knob-and-tube remnants, aluminum branch circuits, cloth-jacketed conductors, and modern romex can all coexist in a single property. Each warrants individual attention and explanation in the final report. Access to the panel, attic, basement, and crawl spaces also influences how long the inspection takes. Cluttered utility rooms and blocked panels slow the process considerably.
Real estate inspections sometimes need to be scheduled within tight contingency windows, and our team accommodates those deadlines whenever possible. Pre-listing inspections for sellers can be scheduled at a more leisurely pace, allowing time for discussion and follow-up questions. Insurance-required inspections typically focus on specific concerns like panel brand or aluminum wiring, which can shorten the visit. The written report usually arrives within one to two business days after the on-site work is complete. Urgent situations can sometimes be accommodated with same-day verbal findings followed by formal documentation. Hokendauqua homeowners receive the same careful attention regardless of the timeline driving the inspection. Booking in advance helps secure a convenient appointment slot.
After the on-site inspection concludes, our electricians review findings with the homeowner and explain observations in plain language before leaving the property. Major safety concerns get communicated immediately so the homeowner can make informed decisions about urgent issues. The written report typically arrives within one to two business days, complete with photos, descriptions, and recommendations. Each finding gets categorized by safety priority and code compliance status. Repair cost estimates accompany significant findings to support budgeting and decision-making. Homeowners can use the report for insurance purposes, real estate negotiations, or simply for their own records. Questions about the report are welcome at any time.
Prioritizing repairs based on inspection findings helps manage costs and address actual safety concerns first. Immediate hazards like exposed live wiring, smoking outlets, or known panel failures need same-day attention. Significant safety issues like double-tapped breakers, ungrounded outlets in wet locations, or aluminum branch wiring should be scheduled within weeks. Code modernization items like AFCI breaker upgrades or tamper-resistant outlets can be planned over time as budget allows. Cosmetic concerns like outdated cover plates have minimal safety impact and can be deferred indefinitely. Edinson Electric provides separate detailed proposals for each repair scope identified during inspection. Bundling related repairs often reduces total project cost.
Long-term electrical planning becomes much easier with a baseline inspection report in hand. Future projects like EV charger installation, generator hookups, or kitchen remodels can be designed with full knowledge of existing capacity and condition. Insurance documentation gets organized for easy reference during claims or policy renewals. Periodic re-inspections every five to ten years track changes and confirm that completed repairs continue to perform. Hokendauqua homeowners who establish a relationship with a trusted electrical contractor benefit from continuity across multiple projects. Family-owned operations like Edinson Electric remember customers and projects in ways that large companies cannot match. Our team is available for follow-up questions long after the inspection report is delivered. Building a maintained electrical system pays dividends in safety, reliability, and home value.
A dedicated electrical inspection before buying a home is highly recommended even when a general home inspection has been performed. General home inspectors are valuable for identifying issues across many systems, but their electrical evaluation is necessarily limited by time and scope. A licensed electrician brings deeper technical knowledge and uses specialized testing equipment that produces more thorough results. The investment in a dedicated electrical inspection is modest compared to the cost of unexpected electrical problems discovered after closing. The information also provides leverage in price negotiations when significant issues are identified.
Older homes especially benefit from dedicated electrical inspections during the purchase process. Pre-1970s homes may have ungrounded branch circuits, knob-and-tube wiring, or aluminum branch wiring that creates significant safety concerns. Homes built between 1965 and 1972 frequently have aluminum branch wiring that requires specific remediation to be safe. Panels installed by Federal Pacific or Zinsco need replacement regardless of other electrical condition. These findings affect both the purchase decision and the necessary budget for post-purchase repairs.
Newer homes can also benefit from electrical inspection because not all new construction is well-executed. DIY work performed by previous owners, unpermitted additions, and improperly completed renovations all create issues that may not be obvious. Solar PV installations, EV chargers, and other modern additions sometimes have installation defects that affect safety and warranty coverage. Edinson Electrical performs purchase inspections for buyers across the Lehigh Valley. Allentown buyers benefit from clear information about what they are buying before they close. The inspection report becomes part of the property records and supports future maintenance decisions.
Inspection findings range from minor recommendations to immediate safety hazards, and the appropriate response varies based on severity. Minor issues like outlet polarity reversals or missing tamper-resistant receptacles are easy to address during routine service visits. Code violations that do not pose immediate hazards may be addressed during planned renovations or upgrades rather than requiring emergency response. Immediate safety hazards like exposed live conductors, overheating panels, or failed grounding systems require prompt attention to prevent injury or property damage. Our inspection reports clearly distinguish between these categories so customers can prioritize appropriately.
Repair pricing is provided as part of comprehensive inspection service when customers request it. We can provide written estimates for any repair work identified during inspection, eliminating the need for separate estimating visits. This service is particularly valuable during real estate transactions when buyers and sellers need to negotiate repair responsibilities. The estimates are based on the same labor and material costs that would apply if the customer were our regular client, with no markup for inspection-driven pricing.
Customers always have the choice of which contractor performs any recommended repairs. We never tie inspection services to repair work, and customers are welcome to use our reports to gather competitive bids. Many customers do choose to have us perform the repairs because the inspection has already familiarized us with their property and electrical system. Edinson Electrical values these long-term relationships built on trust and quality work. Allentown customers benefit from the continuity of having one contractor handle inspection and follow-up repairs when they choose. We back all repair work with our lifetime craftsmanship warranty regardless of whether it followed an inspection or began as a new service call.
A professional electrical inspection is specifically designed to identify conditions that could lead to electrical fires. Loose connections inside panels and at outlets generate heat that, over time, can ignite surrounding materials. Thermal imaging during inspection reveals these hot spots before they become catastrophic. Burned insulation, scorched outlet faces, and melted wire nuts all point to past or ongoing overheating events. Overloaded circuits running near their amperage limit warm the conductors and degrade insulation. Aluminum branch wiring connected without proper devices and antioxidant compound is a well-documented fire hazard. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have failure modes that can prevent breakers from tripping during faults.
Hidden hazards inside walls often surface only during a detailed inspection. Buried junction boxes covered by drywall violate code and prevent access during emergencies. DIY wiring added by previous owners may bypass safety devices or use undersized conductors. Improperly supported cables, missing wire connectors, and exposed splices all create ignition points. Pest damage to wire insulation in attics and basements is a common but overlooked issue. Water intrusion at exterior penetrations corrodes connections and creates ground fault paths. Each of these conditions gets documented during a thorough inspection with photos and clear explanations.
Modern devices like AFCI breakers and GFCI receptacles are designed specifically to prevent electrical fires and shock hazards. Inspections verify that these devices are present where code requires and that they function properly. Older homes built before AFCI requirements existed benefit greatly from voluntary upgrades to arc-fault protection. Whole-house surge protection limits damage from transient overvoltage events caused by lightning or utility issues. Smoke alarms throughout the home get tested and documented as part of the safety review. Hokendauqua homeowners who address inspection findings proactively significantly reduce their fire risk. Insurance companies sometimes offer discounts for homes with documented safety upgrades. Edinson Electric helps prioritize findings by actual safety impact and budget considerations.
