EV Chargers

EV Chargers in Whitehall, PA

Efforts are currently underway to minimize humanity’s carbon footprint and preserve the planet for future generations. Experts are saying that electric vehicles could be an important piece of the puzzle. Right now, the EV industry is still relatively new. Even so, nearly 7 million people have turned to electric vehicles, and the number continues to climb. As more models become available, more people are sure to jump on board.

Everyone who purchases an EV needs to be able to charge it at home while they’re not on the road. That entails having home EV Chargers standing ready to keep those vehicles up and running. In some cases, it also means having a qualified electrician provide installation services.

Looking at Different Types of EV Chargers

Different types of chargers are available for EV owners. Though they all serve their purposes, not all of them are created equally. That’s why many people decide to upgrade from the basic varieties to faster, more efficient options. Take a look at the different types of chargers available to determine which one might best suit your needs.

Level 1 EV Chargers

Level 1 chargers are basic equipment for electric vehicles and hybrids. In fact, every model sold comes with a level 1 charger. These chargers can simply be plugged into a standard 120-volt outlet. Many homeowners have spare outlets in their garages or outside their homes, so they can plug up their chargers as soon as they bring their EVs home. If you don’t have one available at the right place for charging a vehicle, though, you may need to have us install one.

These chargers are highly energy efficient. In fact, they don’t use any more electricity than a typical household appliance. They’re recommended for people who only drive short distances, though. They’re notoriously slow. Some vehicles may take 30 hours or so to fully charge. Because of that, they’re not ideal for people who have long commutes or can’t leave their EVs plugged in for very long.

Level 2 EV Chargers

Level 2 electric vehicle chargers are more powerful than Level 1 versions. They can provide about 25 miles of range per hour and fully charge some EVs in as little as 8 hours. These chargers are sometimes found in public places, but a growing number of people are having them installed in their homes. They’re great for people who drive a lot and need their EVs to be fully charged and ready to go at all times.

That being said, Level 2 chargers aren’t standard equipment. You’ll have to purchase this type of charger separately. They can’t be plugged into typical 120-volt outlets, either. Instead, they require 240-volt connections. They can be hardwired into your home or plugged into the types of outlets clothes dryers use. If you don’t have an extra 240-volt outlet in an opportune place, you’ll have to have one installed.

Level 3 Chargers

Level 3 EV chargers, also known as DC fast chargers, aren’t really meant for home use. They’re usually found at businesses or other public places where EV owners may need to charge while they’re out and about. They’re far more expensive than Level 1 and 2 options, and they require in-depth professional installation measures.

Additional Considerations

Adding new appliances and electrical fixtures to your home places extra strain on its electrical system. EV chargers are no exception. You may need to have us perform an electrical panel upgrade or install a subpanel to ease the burden on your home’s electrical system. Feel free to contact us for an assessment to determine your exact electrical needs.
